quick engine pull question

Well i am about halfway there to pulling my engine out of my 89 gtu, would it be easier to pull the trans out with the engine, or leave the trans in the car ? I am replacing the clutch as well. That is my only question for now, thanks.

trans + engine if you are pulling engine out anyway

i would think it would be easier to leave the trans in the car. as i am in the process of taking mine out as well i am leavening the trans in. if u are planing to take the trans out later i say still leave it in for now. it will be easier to pull the engine without the trans. i would think.

I was thinking I would leave it in also, although i'm just not sure how difficult it will be to get at the bolts holding the trans and engine together. I think i will leave the trans in the car though, I don't need to do anything to the trans other than replace the clutch, and that's on the engine.

I think it's so easy to pull it out with the transmission. The tranny is a bitch to get back on the engine... It might be different when the tranny is still in the car though.

leave the tranny in. Remove the bellhousing bolts. Attack your lift to the block. Place a floor jack under the tranny(use a piece of wood between the jack and the tranny to protect it). Lift the tranny/engine up 2 inches or so using the floor jack. Use your hoist and lift up to take out the slack in the chain and start wiggling. It will come free.

one more question, once i get the engine out im going to replace all the engine seals, but i was looking in the hanes repair manual and they show at least 15-20 different seals per rotor ... assuming all of those are in decent condition (aside from the apex seals ofcourse) which seals should i replace on the rotors alone, which would be the most likely to give me trouble later on down the road ?

oH BOY!..you are in for FUN..with a Capital "EFF"!..if you are Pulling the engine and the Transmission,it will be EASIER than Pulling the Engine, then Trying to hook up the Engine to the transmission Later..IF you Pull Just the Transmission "the trick" is to Angle the Back of the Engine Downwards,so that the transmission will slide onto the Top bolt, and align the Input shaft with the Eccentric Shaft..Besides,If you are Replacing the clutch, then you should replace the PILOT and Throw-out Bearing when doing the clutch.the Bolts Between the Engine and transmission are Not Hard to Get off.(only the Top nut when you have the Engine in,pulling the trans only).Remember if you are Doing Trans Only,Drop it with the Trans Cross member ON,and Drain the FLUID!(the Gear oil will come out from the Output shaft Seal where the driveshaft goes into the trans.)..Good luck..(I am Doing Mine,AGAIN..Yep I assumed a Throw out bearing was Good..but NOPE!..bad Bearing.I could cry!)

hehe.. i know its easier to do it with engine + tranny then bench work everything.

but if you like to listen to the thinkers, then... good luck.

i fucking hated putting my tranny in on the floor, i rather have yanked my engine out to make everything easier.

me and my friend did a t2 swap.. yeah guess what the engine and tranny went in together. we took them apart in the car (n/a..) yeah fuck that it aint happening again.

again best of luck to you, and enjoy it.
