how can u check to see if 5th and 6th ports acre funcitonal on a 88 SE n/a if u dont drive the car?? can u start it and rev it past 3500 to see if they open or do u need to be moving, also what would the top speed be with my mods if my 5th and 6th ports didnt' open as compared to opening. etimate both please...thanx(it seems like my ports arent opening but there is alot of top end and she gets to 90 really quick)

If you do a search, then you should find a shi* load of threads about this. You would be able to see the dashpots moving if they were opening. Just start the car and stand on the passenger side. Then, rev the engine up to about 4k and look right above the exhaust manifold (or downpipe or headers) and right above and on each side of the manifold, you will see a "mushroom" looking thing (one on each side of the manifol). They are activated by vacuum pressure. There should be a hose coming from above each one and connecting to the bottom of the mushroom looking thing. If you were to pull the end of the hose that does NOT connect to the mushroom and blow into it ( you'd probably need an extension, as the hoses are quite short), you would see (hopefully) the mechanism move. Anyway, if you rev the engine up past 4k and see them move on their own, then your ports are opening up. If they don't move, then spray a lot of lubricant on them, and then manually move them up and down a lot to attempt to get them moving again. I've gotten mine to open up quite well now, but they used to be totally frozen shut. The car will seem to lack power past 4k if they aren't opening. It will just feel like the engine is working extra hard. I'm not sure about top speeds though. Good Luck. Let me know if you need some pics for clarification.

Sorry. I didn't notice that you had an 88'. I'm thinking that they use the same mechanisms to open though. I believe that the pressure just comes from a different source. You may wanna check just incase.

You can just pull the hose off of your exhaust (the one that leads to the 5&6 ports) and blow into it to see if they move at all. If they don't, move them manually and work lube into them (as mentioned above).

The easiest way is to rig it up so that it runs off the airpump (if you have one) as it is both easy and cheap. There are a few more methods out there, just do a search for this sort of thread.

If you don't want to change anything, rub grease on them and go for a little drive (I know that you said you didn't want to do this, but it really is the easiest). If the grease is all smeared and rubbed clean, they are working. If it isn't then the don't work. Simple.

BTW, the car has to be in gear to develop the backpressure to open them (86-88 only) so just revving it won't work.

what rubber hose?? where does it lead to on the exhaust?
u said there was a rubber hose coming from the exhaust that led to them

by chacne did this "rubber hose" lead to the cat converter if so they wont open cause my cat is gone

what if you put the rear of the car on jackstands, and have a buddy put it in gear and accelerate while you stand next to the car looking at the actuators? Would that be enough back pressure to activate them?

Pop your hood. Stand next to the passenger fender looking towards the exhaust manifold/headers. You should see a little square/roundish thing with a shaft coming out from the top. Thats one of them. You really cant miss it. The other one is behind the air pump.
