Questions about rx7's backfiring

K im still a noob, I talked to a friend about the backfiring and he said its mainly a n/a thing not a tII. I was just wondering if this is true also he said its due to poor tuning.

My5ABaby 02-20-07 08:32 AM

N/A's tend to run rich in the higher rpm's (when afterburn occurs). This can be ever worse if your car is out of tune (running even richer).

I should clarify... that's stock.

rx7 FC TII 02-20-07 09:24 AM

ya my TII will pop flames...i have full corksport exhaust though....

86fc_Driz 02-20-07 03:23 PM

I currently have an n/a fc and all my cats have been taken off and i backfire like crazy... but i always thought it was because of the high exhaust temperatures

mort2002 02-20-07 04:34 PM

i have an 89 TII and its rare if i shoot a flame. it does it every once in a while but not too often.

hanman 02-20-07 08:17 PM

Or a small leak in your exhaust system will let in fresh oxygen and BOOM.

drugblock12a 02-20-07 08:32 PM

I can account for the oxygen leak and booms that occur from it.

TRnnPnt88 02-20-07 10:09 PM

this is when i had no cat and no intake. it still shot some flames. theres a pic. http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o...8/IMGA0025.jpg

TehMonkay 02-20-07 10:35 PM

High overlap causes the problem, if you have a wide band o2 and a standalone i think some can comprensate for this though. Although i see piston powered cars on TV(watching races etc) do this as well.

reatrdedspleen 02-21-07 02:11 AM

my 90na shoots 2 foot flames at idle, every 10 seconds or so.. and when i shift in high rpm shoots 2, 3 feet.. ocasionaly.. not often it will pop stupid loud... and shoot anywhere from 4, to 12 feet... its ridiculas.. and you can here the pop over a mile away... ridiculas...

I have RB downpipe, RB pre-silencer and then straight pipe all the way back, no mufflers.

Eva001Ikari 02-21-07 03:50 AM

in my experience with 7's i've never seen 1 that doesnt backfire even just a little bit when its on.............whether its at high rpms or not some time or another its going to shoot one off rotaries arent too good at burning fuel lol............and retardedspleen..............ur car is fckin crazy....12 foot flames thats like...........2 times the size of me jeez

jonesfromindia 02-21-07 05:52 AM

12 feet? i dont believe it unless you have a picture. im sure you blow flames pretty far.

my 87 NA with intake and apexi n1 cat back shot flames after running the engine hard.

do you know how incredibly hard it is to take a picture showing how far back a quick flame will shoot?

ok, my buddy Jestersrain, and mittidrummer on the west forum will voutch for me on this one; We were racing down on the freeway, jestersrain was right off my rear bumper, and mittidrummer was right behind him, when my car poped, the flame went all the way past jestersrain and up to the front of mittidrummer.

Jester said he could feel the heat off of it. and mittie drummer said it was half blue half orange.

I'll try and get some video.. we have video of it popping flames at idle, but none while driving.

I can totally validate for retardedspleen's wicked flame shooting... how many of you have 7s that pop flames at idle? hmmm? I'm waiting? lol... and I'm sure the NO CATS help! heh

Jzavala 02-21-07 03:33 PM

i dunno if its me, but i cant wait to shoot some fire out the exhaust, not many cars that i know can do that stock y'know.

jonesfromindia 02-22-07 04:21 PM

:pokeowned i got owned lol

i wasnt saying it was impossible. i mean 12feet is fucking far. but ok retardedspleen i believe you. but if you can get a video, i think that we be a badass video.

I am sad.

My 88 NA never shoots flames. I've had people watch / recorded it on camera / stood behind it and I've never seen it shoot one single flame. :(

It's def. running rich too. You can smell that clear enough. :-P

Cheers,

same here, my 88 n/a never shot flames, even with straight RB exhaust, no emissions/rats nest. my GXL did it every time you rev it past 7k on command. my TII really randomly but only after boosting

fcdrifter13 02-22-07 10:24 PM

IT has to be rich but not to rich or itll cool down the exhaust to much. Also helps if th car is warmed up.

slpin 02-22-07 10:30 PM

my t2 does little blue fireballs
then foot/2 footers once in a while

helghast7 02-23-07 10:15 PM

i wish mine would shoot flames to...hell i wish mine would backfire.

ive got a n/a 87 and all it does is these little clicking noises after it revs...now that i think of it, is that a bad thing?

Bama420 02-24-07 01:39 AM

I'v got a 90 GTU withstock manifold, 2.5" pre cat tubing, and some OEM look cat back. (It was free from a vert that I stripped at work and it was better than my gutted stock) I was beginning to be sad that I didn't shoot flames until our welder at work told me how he watches me shoot little blue fireballs every time he sees me pull out of our parking lot. I literally jumped up and downwhen I heard that. Now it's time for an ISC header, 2.5 or 3" pre cat tubing, and an Apex'i N1 Dual cat back. I can't wait.
