Hello :)

I am looking to replace my current car which is an 89 Mx-6. I have been thinking about either a turbocharged Mx6 or an Rx-7. A friend of mine has a 90 626 5-door turbo. With 1k in mods we have managed to get it to do 0-60 in 6.4 and the 1/4 in mid 14s. I am wondering what can be done with an Rx-7.

I am wondering what the 0-60 times are for the TII and N/A FCs.
How many PSI is the stock turbo pushing on the TII and what can it be increased to on the stock fuel system?

I know you must get this a lot, but how reliable is the rotary engine? From what I can find, it seems that the apex seals are the most problematic. How often do they wear out? Is there anything else that I should know about with these cars? How much does all the parts cost for an engine rebuild?

How hard is it to find a TII? I have been looking on ebay, cars.com, autoshopper.com and have had little luck finding one. :(

Hey welcome to the forum.

Yeah the turbo 323/626/jspec 929s/mx3s/mx6s are all fun cars.

Keep in mind though the rx7s are uncomprimising sports cars whereas the other mazdas are sports coups or sports sedans.

The TIIs run 60MPH in ~6.7s OEM and 6.0s with stage I mods. The NAs are in the high 7s I believe. 13s are very capable as well with stage I mods.

For the 2nd gen rx7s, the 86-88's push 5.5PSI & 180HP and the 89-92s push 6.5PSI & 200HP. The fuel system maxes

before the turbo does, but you can run about 240HP @ 8-9PSI.

The rx7s great chassis, perfect 50/50 balancing, wide powerbands, mid-high end muscle, stiff chassis, soft ride, extreemly good cornering, sweet looks, light chassis, and low drag make it a great sports car.

The rotary engine's ability to reliably handle massive HP is what's been driving the international following from car enthusiest, performance manufacturers, tuners, racers, and aftermarket companies. The 2 rotor TII engine handles 450+HP and the 3 rotor handles 650+HP.

You also have a wide selection of bodykits, performance upgrades, OEM & aftermarket parts, and accessories.

OEM Engine life is:
86-88 NAs - 200-300K miles
86-88 TIIs - 180-220k miles
89-92 NAs - 180-240K miles
89-92 TIIs - 140-160K miles

Even when you need a rebuild the kit's are fairly inexpensive and do it yourself to save labor cost. There are videos and books to assist as well.

Other than this every sports car has their quirks. The rx7s have a few electrical bugs that are well documented and have do it yourself fixes. Also as the fuel injectors get dirty the engines tend to flood. The 89-92s have a incar bypass/fuel cut (press the pedal and crank). In the 86-88s you can avoid fooding (wait 30 min), have the injectors cleaned/blueprinted, install a fuel cut swtich, or pull the fuel system fuse when it happens.

Finding a TII's not hard. Check thepartstrader.com, ebay.com, autotrader.com. I spotted 4 TIIs, 4 convertibles, and a bunch of NAs in autotrader alone last week. I'd personally recommend an 89-92 TII or an 88 10th Aniversery. Both are capable of massive HP levels but the 89-92s have more OEM HP.
