Question for guys who know GTUs'.

I'm looking at a 1990 GTUs but have a couple questions.

Did all GTUs come with aluminum hoods?
Did GTUs in 1990 come with steel hoods at all?
This 1990 GTUs has a steel hood.

Has anyone ever done a CARFAX on a GTUs? When I did one on this GTUs it came back 1990 MAZDA RX7 GTU/GLX not GTUs.

Thanks

Well technically in 1990 there was no GTUs produced, that would explain why it would not come up as that on a carfax. Only about 100 escaped in 1990. GTUs's should have an aluminum hood, but again, being as they werent being made in 1990, it could have just had a steel one installed. Can you tell us more about the car? Options, color, sunroof?? Does it have the mesh 16" wheels?

Look at the sticker inside the door that lists GVWR, tire pressure and tire size. Does the sticker list a tire size of 205/55-16? Or 205/60-15? If it's a GTUs, it should list the 205/55-16. That's the dead ringer right there.

Yes all GTUs's came with aluminum hoods.

A quick GTUs check would be to open the drivers side door the tire size should be 205-55-R16, It should have manual windows, no rear window wiper, NO tilt steering, and no sun roof. If it fits those requirements it's a GTUs and it's possible it was in a car accident and some one replaced the hood with the wrong one or they just swapped it because they did not know.

Yes they were made in 90 but only to the tune of a fiew hundred acording to my source at Mazdaspeed.

how much difference in weight is the aluminum hood as compared to the steel?, also are carbon fiber hoods available?...will all hoods swap?

The car is here https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=199846

The carfax is clean.

The problem I have is the steel hood. I'm worried it was in a front end collision.

Also the VIN by the dash has a crack in the dash. Worried the VIN plate was replaced for some reason. Or is the an easy spot to crack in a rx7? It definitly looks like a GTUs, just worried a new nose was grafted on.

Also can't tell if the L rear quater panel has a dent.

Any help.

FC3s.org has CF hoods. Steel to AL savings is ~25 lbs(Someone correct me its late and I'm fried)

about 20 lbs, hoods are interchangable if you swap hinges and latches as well

If you're worried about the vin, have them take a picture of the passanger area of the firewall under the hood and you'll see the VIN imprinted there in big letters

if it turns out to be a GTUs, jump on that bad boy quick!!
man, a 1990 GTUs isn't something that's readily available. and it would be terrible if some ass ended up getting it, and doing a V8 conversion or something to it :(

My VIN plate on my FC has a crack in it. It is about the only thing in the interior that has anything wrong with it , my interior is almost flawless, which leads me to believe it is an easy thing to crack..

Icemark 07-03-03 12:20 AM

sun kills the plastic, but can't damage the vin plate under the hood.

0100 07-03-03 02:40 AM

So how many VINs are there under the hood, just the one on the passenger side firewall?

Rxmfn7 the crack you have is it the VIN plate or is it like this car where it's the plastic that holds the plate?

rotary>piston 07-03-03 11:09 PM

That vin plate always seems to crack.
My car is a GTUs, but it has a steel hood because the previous owner got caught in a hail storm 4 years before I bought the car, and just swapped a steel one on. The only benefit you'll really notice with an aluminum hood is that it'll be easier to open the hood. Saving 20 lbs will give you no performance at all.
