Question for all GTU owners.

How many GTU owners have no Cold Start assist?

I just saw the first one and was sold in Michigan, Capt Wankel has the car, and the manifold never had a cold start assist on it and he doesn't have the bottle either..
When I mean never, I mean the factory never even cut out the manifold for it..

Is this normal? Speak out GTU owners...GTUs are more different than we think..

It was on mine, key word was

Cold start assit was a feature of non-Californian US Federal and Canadian cars, that was eventually discarded. It should be removed from all FCs.

There is a TSB on removing it and why it is no longer recommended for use on 48 state cars (New York and CA had the same new car emissions restrictions).

So if I understand what you said.. basically the car being it was sold in Michigan, it was supposed to be delivered to Canada or California?

Why do other cars have them, even if not sold in those areas?

This is the first car I have seen without it and seems rather rare.. maybe I just haven't been paying attention to details...

No, I must have been clear.

Cold start came on 48 state cars.

It did not come on California and New York spec cars because California and New York had tighter new car emission restrictions.

But Mazda figured out that the system increased Federal spec cars when the system got old. So to avoid the 100K mile emission system ruling (that the car must have working emissions designed to last for 100K miles) and that the system increased emissions levels, Mazda sent a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) to the dealers saying to remove the system when it was found on any car brought in for service.

When I bought my car from a guy in NY (88 GTU) it still had all of the cold start junk in there, only all the hoses and nipples where capped.

My 86 parts car has the same.
