Question about dashpot.
 

No, its not a stupid "I want to throw bigger flames" question. Lol Actually, my car has always been REALLY jerky when I let off of the throttle, its not motor or tranny mounts either. I tried to adjust my dashpot but it never did anything. Well, my car used to backfire as loud as a rifle when I shifted really high, and throw about 2 foot flames. So I completely took my dashpot off to see if the car acted any differently, and it seems to run more normal. I dont get any backfires at high shifts and rarely get flames. So what the hell does this mean? Less backfires and flames without dashpot on? Was it not working in the first place or what, because I want to put it back on but I dunno....

Since its function is to prevent the throttle plates from slamming shut on a quick decel, if she's running better with it off, with it on there it might have been a little "slow", allowing excessive intake air which contributed to your backfiring. Mine backfires on a "balls to the wall" shift also, then again I'm shoving continuous air into my "non-existant" cat from the air pump, so I figured that was what was causing it...Hmmm, might have to try what you're doing with the dashpot...

A dashpot is a round looking thing on the throttle body. It cushions the throttle plates when they are slammed shit.

I removed all of mine.

Hmm, I am going to tinker around with it and see why its not working.

hhhmm i wouldnt know why removing it would cause loss of flames... when you remove it the TB plates slam shut cuasing the air to not flow thru which in turn makes your motor run very rich and bog a bit, and when you run rich you are more than likely to throw flames.... are you sure you are throwing them right... after modifying my dashpot i have more backfires than before i modified it

Exactly, thats why I dont get it. Does that mean there is something wrong with my throttle plates or what? I dont know.

Rhetorical question: Don't the injectors shut off when you let off the throttle? Rhetorical answer: Yes. If the tps is set right.

Yes Hailers, but during a hard romp, and knowing that our girls run rich as hell, don't you think that SOME fuel is still making its way through the exhaust process? My backfires are always in the cat (sounds like it's even further back than that), and always singular events...

And yes, my TPS is set right, I just checked it out through a 50 mile drive to work the other day...:)

Hey Rat- since you have 'em off, how's the driveability & backfiring (if any)?

Since I have mine off, I dont notice any difference whatsoever in driveability. It feels exactly the same as before. Dont know what people are talking about that it can make your car stall and all that, but mine didnt make any difference.

I can see where the "stalling" talk would come from- slamming the air off like that can cause "compressor stall" effects, which obviously doesn't affect a rotary as bad as a jet engine...

I'm just wondering if removing that sucker is gonna take care of the backfiring, without causing any "collateral damage"...
