question about brakes???

i was wondering if any one has tried to buy bigger rotors for the front(and possibly rear) of their car that they could use with the stock calipers( if they made a custom bracket to hold the caliper). in a sense a stock, custom big brake kit

RETed 12-12-06 11:58 PM

No.

i was also thinking about that instead of a full big brake kit which costs $$$$
it can be done, you just have to make some brackets for your calipers.

fc3sna 12-13-06 11:35 AM

well if this has never been done, how possible is it. i know i say a kit for first gen rx-7s that was a large rotor set and custom brackets for the stock calipers. i think it included custom lines too.

PM HiGGi. He redrilled Porsche brakes and fit them up. Ask him for the details.

Black91n/a 12-13-06 12:39 PM

There is such a kit available for the front of the FD, it's called the Mandeville big brake kit. They widen the stock calipers, mount them on custom brackets and use larger, thicker rotors with them. A good cheap kit for the rear is abailable from Corksport. There are disadvantages with the Mandeville kit, the pad shape isn't right for a larger rotor, as it was designed for a much smaller one.

You don't need big brakes unless you've got consitent brake fads issues at the track and have tried everything else.

i know your gonna flame on me, it mostly for looks and i know for sure my vert needs new brakes and im just looking at options

hIGGI 12-13-06 04:17 PM

I happened to obtain bigger 4 piston Brembo calipers (BMW 7,8 or M5) and mated them to BMW X5 rotors (330x30mm), redrilled rotors to 5x114,3, center hole of the rotors had to be made bigger as well little bit. Making adapter to fit calipers to our spindle was last part of the deal, and to get better pedal feel, i opted for 929 MC upgrade....

Racing beat as some good brake upgrades

Check this place out.

If you are just looking for better braking--check out raceshopper.com (SP Performance)
I got slotted rotors from them, with performance pads and my braking went up considerably. Stock rotor size, got all 4 for the price of 2 OEM replacements. They cut them at the time of the order also. Turnaround was speedy. Before spending all the $$ on a big brake kit, perhaps look into these guys first.

first thing on the list.
"The CorkSport rear brake upgrade kit is designed to give the needed performance upgrade for braking and styling for your FC. The kit works with all models that have vented rear disc brakes. By using a larger diameter brake rotor it gives more leverage increasing the brake force while using the stock rear calipers and brake pads. The larger rear rotor also fills the rear wheels up over the stock diameter brake rotor."

If you use the Corksport rears without anything better in the front you'll have rear lockup problems and your stopping distances will INCREASE.

For better braking all you need is to get the rotors turned, or if they're cracked, too thin or otherwise junk, replace them with cheap NAPA rotors, get some good pads, something like Hawk HPS, and replace the fluid with new stuff (flush it all out). Also, replacing the lines is a good move, as they're likely very old.

That'll give you good braking.

If you want looks, get drilled rotors and paint the calipers red (I think that's ghey, but hey, that's me). If you're really keen, grind off the MAZDA, and paint BREMBO on them. That'll impress the ladies.

I believe the OP was implying upgrade for the fronts...

To the OP...
Yes, it is possible to just make a bracket.
I cannot think of anyone that is offering such an option that is easily purchased commercially.

is it possible to contact a company that makes big brakes and get a rotor that is the same thickness and the same bolt set up and then just fab up brackets. and im wanting front the rear i can just put slotted stock on.
also thanks for all the input

Black91n/a 12-14-06 01:12 AM

You can get rotors and hats from Wilwood, Coleman, and many others, some will even make custom hats, but getting rotors that thin will be a challenge.

My5ABaby 12-14-06 06:54 AM

I'd like to point out that the STOCK stopping distance is 120ft.

Comparable stopping distance (in ft.)
2005 Vette: 117
2005 Vette Z06: 110
Ferrari Modena: 122
Mercedes CLK 430: 119
Mistu Eclipse 2.0: 132

I'm pretty damn happy with those comparisons. Those numbers were taken from a few sites that may not be completely accurate, but close enough.

Black91n/a 12-14-06 10:52 AM

Are you sure those are all from the same speed? It's fairly common for tests to be done from 60, 70, and 80. So it may be deceptive if those are all at 70, where the FC was done at 60.

Most peoples cars won't stop that fast these days because they've got half working, worn out brakes and crappy all season tires. Tires are the greatest factor in short stopping distances, and are hugely variable from car to car, with race tires nearly anything will stop quickly.

Yep, they sure are :)

I think this guy is after bigger brakes for merely looks only. In which case, sure, Im positive you can fit something from some car and amek it work.

BUT!!!!!

Even though its just for looks (in your case) bear in mind that getting a custom bracket made for your caliper, running giant rotors that are custom mounted, and doing probably several other little custom details to your brakes could be potentially VERY VERY dangerous.

IMHO - if you're really considering this and you have to ask how its possible, its perhaps over you skill level for something as vital as brakes. Now, there was someone aroudn here who had a GB on some type of FC big brake kit (12" and 13" rotors IIRC) see if you can nail down the thread with searching and PM him for a price. Because when you add up all the custom nick nacks and running around you'll need to do to make this work, you may as well plop down the thousand dollars and get a box with everything that will bolt right up and simply work.

fc3sna 12-14-06 11:19 AM

ill look into that, because every kit ive seen is like $1800+ and its just the front.

Black91n/a 12-14-06 12:46 PM

Precision brakes does/did offer an FC front kit for about $1300, but the site has changed and I no longer see the kits there. They weren't the best, they used the cheap Wilwoods, which are prone to flexing a lot.
