q about charcoal canister

all the hard lines that run against the firewall .can i remove all the ones that used to run to the charcoal canister?

Street_Knight 04-04-08 08:35 PM

Yup....Remove with extreme prejudice

l4nc3r 04-04-08 10:36 PM

So, the charcoal canister isn't really needed is it? I'm gonna admit and say i didn't search and I should have, so blast me all you want, but in the end, could I have an answer :P

whereiscarmensandiego 04-04-08 11:12 PM

the charcoal canister is part of the emissions and it keeps the fuel smell and stuff out of the air it is what most stuff in the car is vented too.its kinda like an air purifier so we dont harm the preciouse ozone

Aaron Cake 04-05-08 08:42 AM

The charcoal canister is also part of the stock PCV system. If you've eliminated all that, then the pipe on the firewall is just sitting there and doing nothing. So yes, you can remove it.

However I don't see why people take apart these systems. The PCV is needed to keep nasty vapours from building in the crankcase, and the charcoal canister captures fuel vapours created in the tank. If you open vent these systems you have a car that will reek like fuel and either have to run an oil catch can or put up with the filler neck puking oil vapour all over the engine.

Whizbang 04-05-08 10:57 AM

i agree^^.

My old TII didnt have it and there was always a faint gas smell that fools you into thinking you have gas leaks, etc.

l4nc3r 04-05-08 12:15 PM

Aaron, can I have your brain please? :P Well, another question. Where would be a good convenient place to relocate the charcoal canister to make it look "cleaner" inside the bay? I guess I just have to trial and error it.

Whizbang 04-05-08 01:00 PM

you might be able to find another smaller charcoal canister from the junkyard to use. Or have two. One tuck in the rear of the car, and then something for the PCV.

Where ever it fits. Can't think of a good place right now. Maybe make a sheet metal cover to "clean" up the entire area?

Romanator 03-24-09 03:47 PM

I removed my charcoal canister and removed the hard lines on the firewall. Now there's a rubber hose just hanging there next to my fuel lines. If I dont want my car to reek of gas or risk having gas vapours come into contact with the extreme heat that a turbo rotary produces. What can I do about that ? Should I just cap the rubber hose shut ?

wvumtnbkr 03-25-09 01:39 PM

you shuold put it back on.

What was your reason for removing it? It obviously wasn't cosmetic if you have rubber hoses just hanging out.

Put it back, or come up with a GOOD reason to remove it.

Romanator 03-27-09 07:03 PM

I removed it because I thought it was part of the emission removal procedure. And I threw away the rats nest and sold the charcoal canister on this forum. So NOW what do I do about that hose.

cmanns 03-27-09 07:13 PM

cry in the corner.

What else would you do? Shit you got two options

Catch can

Get another charcoal canister

hmm which one would be smartest to go with, oh that requires a brain

KhanArtisT 03-27-09 07:53 PM

You can get a nice catch can on Ebay for $20. Or use a Soda bottle or something.

2slow4stock 03-28-09 12:48 AM

Yeah, home made catch can ftw.

Yeah, soda bottle catch can. Stick that loose hose into the top of your empty mountain dew bottle.:hahaha:

That really cleans up the under-hood view.

Romanator 03-28-09 10:34 AM

Question out of curiosity. Can I use 1 catch can for both oil and gas vapours ? Or would it be smarter to have 1 for each ?

JustJeff 03-28-09 11:48 AM

I've got a quick question.

I've been trying to track down a gas smell. I don't have any gas leaking out of the fuel system. I replaced all the rubber fuel lines, checked for leaks. But I smell gas on start up, at idle, and after the car has warmed up and been driven. I do have 800cc secondaries and havent' added any extra fuel control yet. Secondaries only open up after 3500 RPMs or such though correct?

My charcoal canister is venting to open air from a hose out of the bottom of it. Is this the correct setup?

Is it possible for the charcoal canister to get saturated over time and stop working? If time permits I may do a temp soda can replacement, see if it helps or hurts my stink problem.

yes.

JustJeff 03-28-09 12:23 PM

Thanks 87, there is a 2nd gen in a local junkyard with the canister on it, maybe i'll swing by and get it, see if there is a difference in smell between mine, that one, and a temp can/bottle

Romanator 03-30-09 10:39 PM

Still awaiting answer...

Damn this is a good question, from what I've read fuel vapors contaminate oil and cause it to break down, the question is would they actually make it all the way to the oil pan...

If you're going for the "rat rod" aesthetic, that would be the way to go.
Even better would be a PBR can.

Romanator 04-30-09 12:02 AM

How about running a rubber hose from the gas vapour line to the intake manifold ?

arghx 04-30-09 07:47 AM

I've got my charcoal canister hard line open vented and i've never noticed a smell.
