Putting a cold air intake in an NA RX-7?
 

Would I need these 2 items for it to go into my na RX-7 or would i need somehting else?

looks like it would be way too long to be attached to your Air Flow Meter. probably wouldnt clear the front cross bar behind the passenger side headlight.
A k&n cone style or replacement filter would be a lot cheaper and would work just as well. I do like that ram air hose though.

When constructing a "cold air" intake you have two options:

-Attach a filter to the AFM, fab an enclosure around it and duct fresh air in.

-Locate the filter in an unheated airstream (like, before the radiator) and connect it to the AFM.

Those intakes do neither.
Weapon R's entire business plan depends on the consumer confusing "different" with "better".

The car comes from the factory with a cold air intake. Those parts will actually turn it into a hot air intake unless you also fabricate a new air box and body inlet. Also, an aftermarket intake is not worth the trouble for a fairly stock non-turbo engine, as the stock system doesn't seem to have any difficulty supplying air up to around 200hp. However, if you are just looking for a project, then you can directly attach a K&N cone filter to a 1989-92 AFM, or you can buy an adapter to attach it to a 1986-88 AFM. RP and HKS make a good AFM adapter, or you can get a crummy Ebay adapter that isn't quite as efficient but will still work OK. The fabricated air box needs to give at least an inch or two of room around the cone filter, the body inlet should have about 21 sq in of area. Any hose should be about 4-5" diameter.

For sizing a K&N cone filter, you can use my stupid formula which I think is less stupid than the other guidance you will see on the internet: Horsepower Potential = Filter Media Area square inches * 4.53. When in doubt just use the next larger size filter, as this will not hurt anything and the filter will not get dirty as fast.

If you want to retain the air pump after converting to a cone type filter, then you will need a small "crankcase vent" filter for its hose. Sorry, I don't remember the size off hand.

i orderd the hks intake and the RP air pump filter for my 87 gxl N/A with 65k miles, will there be any HP increase?

no it will then draw HOT engine bay air, you need a heat sheild and duct ambient air in.

Guys guys guys.. you're forgetting one very important factor. The intimidation factor. Hot air won't want to go near that intake system, it'd be scared. lol.

Dude, you're better off just buying a K and N drop in filter and calling it a day. If you want a few more ponies from your car, go with Racing beat header, highflow cats and a good cat back exhaust system.

You want more power sell it and buy a turbo!!

I bought a "cold air intake" and ran that for about 1,000 miles. After reading up on it more and more I actually switched it back to the stock cold air intake. I just bought a K&N filter to replace the stock filter.

For me I thought, "I think Ill make a cold air box and keep all the hot air away from the intake." After thinking about it more and more it just made more sense to put the stock one back on. No need to do more work than needed when driving a stock GXL.

attach it to the AFM that is attached to the stock air box.

use a dremel to grind out the ridges in the stock air box. use epoxy and sand it smooth if you accidentally take out too much and make a hole.

drop in a K&N filter.

make sure your car still has the snorkel and plastic ducts in front of the radiator.

the best intake you can get and costs less than the inbay cone style

if your looking for cosmetics its a good idea
if your looking for performace bad idea you will loose power

Save your money. aftermarket intake on a stockport n/a is a waste of time.

Use that money for fuel, investment for your future, or beer.

Back about 6 years ago when I was 16/17:

I removed my windshield washer reservoir, and used my head light washer bottle for the windshield

Then I drilled a 3" hole in front of the wheel arch on that flat spot by the resistor

Then i used a 2 1/2" 90 degree elbow and installed the filter where the windsheild reservoir used to be

the filter i have Just fits in the space left, it gets lots of fresh air coming from the bumper

Works well can feel a difference on a track day when the engine bay gets heat soaked

I bought the custom setup off JohnV race car and really like how it works on the street. It would work even better if I were ever to install the CorkSport header and get her dyno tuned :nod:

I actually made a bad ass (IMHO) air box for a Bonez intake on my prior T2 like 7 years ago. I was made from sheet metal, foam and duct tape. I also had the headlight over with the opening feeding cold air as well as the sock air ducting feeding cold air into it. It didn't look to "baller" but it was very funcitional and I noticed a significant difference in power when up to temperature before and after the box was made.

Wish I still had pics of it.

I really like that, looks good. Shame there is not something similar available for the turbo version.
