the reason the car goes up to 3k as soon as you starts it up is probably because the idle air motor is completely opened when coolant temperature is low. once it senses the car is started, computer will slowing adjust the pulse and let less air to the engine, thats when the idle drops half way. Then, as the coolant temp goes up, the idle drops slowly to the default idle rpm.
Letting the rev jump to 3k is not so good for the car. The oil has not lubricate the bearing completely yet, the oil pressure has not build up yet, the high rev we cause some wear to the bearings. Start the car in gear will by pass the reset on the idle air motor, and it will not jump up so high in the inital start up.

Almost. The Phoenix was the ship.

The Fiery Phoenix was the 'attack' they used as a last resort...

Oh, and a soundtrack is available, too. Visiti your local comic shop.

ttyl,
Amur_, still letting his car warm up (my girl needs a little foreplay before I take her to the mat, ne?) ;)

try to blip the throttle as soon as you start to get the rpm's down, that or start the car in gear, i've heard that works too
as for rpms dropping, it takes me a lot of driving before my car ever hits the normal 800 rpm, so i wouldn't worry about that
but screw sitting there while it idles, just drive it softly while its warming up
you'll waste less gas, and also i read somewhere that gasoline removes oil from metals, so with the rich fuel mixture at idle, you're probably causing the engine more friction than it needs

Ok...starting your car in first gear will disable the AWS. Also, having the engine UNDER LOAD WILL use more gas than just sitting there and letting it idle...I dont know where youre coming up with some of this.

I *always* let my NA FC warm up to operating temp before going anywhere. And she idles smoothly all the way. Having a remote starter means that I can often do this without freezing my cookies off. :)

I've always subscribed to the theory that driving off with a cold engine is a BAD THING. :dunce:

>>Now, it doesn't do any warmup idle at all and I've been trying to figure out why. It just runs really rough while it's warming up at 850RPM.

A rough idle often suggests a vacuum leak. Also, how long has it been since your car's had a check up? There are separate adjusters for the idle and maybe they just need some tweaking. :)

>>blipping the throtle doesnt do nething on my car when its at 3grand.
Mine, neither. Once she's up, she's up 'til she's done. :)

Don't quote me on this, but I think that you're just splitting hairs here. Of course gas is going remove oil. It's a *solvent*. But we have our nifty OMP continually spraying oil on the rotors. Whatever the gas is taking away, the OMP is putting right back. :) And I doubt that the increase in gas in the Cold mixture would have such harsh results.

I agree with everything you said except, "It isn't starting it in gear that bypasses the 3k warm-up, per se. It's starting your RX-7 with the clutch in."

If you have a manual transmission car, which you hinted to by mentioning a clutch, you cant start it UNLESS the clutch is pushed in. The AWS system IS disabled by starting your car in gear...End of story.

P.S. Yes, I do realize that some MT cars could be started without the clutch being pusehd in becaue the sensor was removed for one of various reasons.. i.e. Remote starter

My bad. :) Don't remember where I heard that. It was a long time ago. And, yup, the switch on my clutch is null and void (my remote starter is meant only for automatics - they didn't have any for standards when I hit the store...) The car was like that when I got her. Previous owner's tinkerings or something... Whatever. I happy with it like this. :)

ttyl,
Amur_, who's only remote-started it in gear twice (something I don't recommend!)

lol Im sorry :( Ive heard horror stories about things like that

Amur_ 03-30-02 10:14 PM

The first time was the first time I started it with the remote. I had the car at the shop at work. With the bay door open and the car pointing out, thank christ! I'd been fiddling with the center console and had put the car in 2nd in order to pull the centerpiece out. And I forgot about it.

2 hours later I had packed up and was ready to go. Weeeell, I'll just use the remote starter to let her warm up while I finish straightening up the shop. With my back to the car I raised my arm and hit the button...

And she sounded like she was having a hell of a time starting. Huh? I turned around and the car was halfway out the bay door! I charged over and hopped through the passenger window (which was down) and pounded on the shifter until it popped out of gear (one or two hits.) Then I got out, looked around and laughed my ass off. And it was about 10pm, btw, so there was no one else around to get hit.

The 2nd time I was walking to my car after getting out of a downtown mall. My 7 was parked along a curb behind a late model Sebring. With only 40 feet or so to go, I whipped out the remote and hit the button. She made the same hard-starting noise and then... mashed herself into the back of the Sebring.

***FUCK!!!***

I picked up my walking pace a little, and as non-challantly as possible got in my car, disabled the starter (which was about to try to re-start the car after its first attempt failed!) restarted it, backed up, casually looked around (no one nearby) and drove off.

When I got a few blocks away I finally started to relax and started to laugh my balls off. I was already planning on heading down to my mechanic's to drop off some print-outs and ask some questions, so I went down and then had a look at the front of the car.

You wouldn't have known that anything had happened. And I didn't see any obvious damage when I backed away from the Sebring. My front and his rear are mostly formed plastics n' such, and I guess there was so much give between the two (and my starter abandoned its first attempt before it could really snuggle in there) that we both came out of it none the worse for wear... Lucky me. :dunce:

It hasn't happened since. I've managed to train myself to leave the car in neutral before getting out. :)

i dont know what you guys are talking about........starting the car in gear does not matter.

it still jumps to 3 k and it pisses me off because i know it is bad for the engine.

so how can i avoid it?

My TII always does the 3000 rpm warmup thing, (in gear or not) but I tap the gas and that usually brings it down to about 1500. However, the rpms wander all over the place until I get on the gas a bit. Once the car is up to operating temp she idles like a dream. Is this something to worry about? No smoke on startup.
