Pros and cons of Exhaust systems for the Rx-7
 

Ok i hear all about all different kinds of exhaust on the forum but i have never heard the name flowmaster mentioned.

they do make good stuff and i love the sound they create so why have i never heard about them on 7s?

they are reasonable in price too....

actually i think we should make this a compilation of all exhaust systems and the pros and cons and then archive it.

Flowmasters cant handle a rotary exhaust. The welds on the baffles break free within a few months, and the muffler starts rattling. Ive never actually heard one on a rotary, but I think(from hearing them on other cars) it would sound like shit and be very very loud.

I have 2 chamber flow masters on my blown 5.0
if they handle that much exhaust I am sure that they
can handle it from a 7.
I have had my flowmasters for 2 years and they don't rattle
I would advise 3 chamber they are a little more quiet
but if you want big exhaust note go with 1 chamber
man they are LOUD

We're not talking about exhaust gas volume, we're talking about the heat. Flowmasters simply cant hendle the heat of a rotary well.

60,000+ miles on a Flowmast 50-series on my '83 Limited; never popped a weld, even shifting half the time at or above 9000rpm. And best of all, it made a god-awful roar that made sure all Hondas within 1.5 blocks knew just what kind of medicine they were getting ready to get. :devil:

Yea, i had them on my 67 impala, for years adn they never burnt out, but my exhaust did not shoot flames, and did not change the color or the pipe all the way to the exhaust tips, Also you drive a japanese tuner car, why not get a jap tuner exhaust that actually helps with the cars appearance to.

i never pictured flowmasters on a import, mostly on americans. I dont think a 1 chamber flowwmaster would be THAT loud. Try listening to a corksport exhaust with full 3" RB piping. Now thats LOUD! I daily drive my car and usually wear earplugs when I drive my TII.

Here's the deal. The exhaust pulses from a Wankel are sharp cracks as opposed to the puffs of a piston engine. It will bang the welds out of most standard presilencers & mufflers. So, you might get away with a flowmaster on a turbo, but not on the N/A’s

PM FreedS4, he's got a single Flowmaster on his TII. 2.5" RB DP straight piped into the muffler and 2.5"out. You definitely know when he's around.

i can speak from first hand experience on the strength of 7 exhaust pulses... my 90 gxl knocked the pre-silencer piping loose within a day when i had the headers put in.....

Hey, like jimmyv13 said I've got a Flowmaster Delta 40 series single muffler on my Turbo II. I've had it on there for a couple months now and nothing's changed since I bought it. It's pretty loud but it's acceptible. I crew for a guy that races RX-7's at a local road track. There's quite a few RX-7's up there and a couple of them have the same muffler I have. The thing with the Flowmaster is that it's chmabered so it sounds completely different then most mufflers, the muffler has a sort of ring to it, I love it.

When I had my 87 NA, I called Flowmaster to see what they said regarding an exhaust system for the rex. The Tech Support guy told me straight up that Flowmasters will work for the first couple of months, then after that they will start to melt from the inside. He recommended racing beat. For that I took his advice, but now I respect flowmaster even more for their straightforwardness.

Speaking of muflers, I just put on 2 Powertech Pt1010
on my 86 Rx-7 and it is sick. They have 4.5 inch tips and are not that expensive. It cost around $650 to buy and install. The sound they make while your screaming past

When i bought my 74 repu, it had a burnt out flow master on it....it was pretty tinny sounding. Just take my word for it...you will regret it. They sound good on a v8, but terriable on a Rotary. CJ
