Project Mary-Kate
It started on craigs list when I saw a 91 RX-7 for sale 15 miles away from me... Blown engine,
but good body. Email soon revealed that the car belonged to a female - and when I heard that, I kinda knew the car would be in good condition - as females are much more caring... After a few emails and phone calls, I got the location of the car and checked it out at a rainy December night. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/1.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/2.jpg Jan 01, 05, I took the car for $300 and spent 100 on towing back to my house. Here is New Years Night, with a picture of my car in the background. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/3.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/4.jpg The following days became trying to get the engine started days - though now I realize what a waste of time that was  , as all the apex seals were rusted onto the rear rotor - even to this day. The front wasn't doing too well either. That is when I decided to tear everything out... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/5.jpg |
and pull the motor
http://www.slpin.com/images/more/6.jpg The motor soon found a place in the garage and rest there for a little - as - at that point, i was still spending all my money on robitussin. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/7.jpg Now, to the interior of the car. It was pretty flawless, and the car has relateively low miles. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/8.jpg However, a problem DOES exist and it is... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/9.jpg That problem was soon followed with a solution as my other rx-7 has... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/10.jpg |
And in no time... The red rx-7 has...
http://www.slpin.com/images/more/11.jpg However, a problem still exist as the car has no engine. Yet, fortunately, I have another rx-7 with a good engine - but ugly body and interior... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/12.jpg That engine soon found its way into the car along with a Kevin Landers designed bracket. The bracket was welded front and back, and the transmission was aligned center before the hole was drilled. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/13.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/14.jpg By then, it was also half way thru with my senior year - and we have a project called "Senior Project". After a quick thought, I decided that it would be a great idea to rebuild the original engine of mary-kate, and decided that as my "Senior Project" http://www.slpin.com/images/more/15.jpg |
But, as I begin to tear the engine apart, I was in for a known suprise...
http://www.slpin.com/images/more/16.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/17.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/18.jpg The rotor was... well... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/19.jpg At that point, I decided to buy a different motor, and end up getting a J-Spec S5 Motor with a NA tranny for $300. The catch? Blown apex seal on front rotor... Here you see the J-Spec on the left and the NA apart. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/20.jpg |
And the ugly front rotor housing... which i subsituted with a NA housing on the front...
http://www.slpin.com/images/more/21.jpg And the damaged rotor groove - which was later repaired and still works to this date... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/22.jpg The engine was then assembled... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/23.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/24.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/25.jpg |
And installed into my car...
http://www.slpin.com/images/more/26.jpg After a cloud of smoke, the car started and idled at the pre-set 1.6k... It will run like this for many hours to come... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/27.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/28.jpg Here is a picture of the car - with the tailpipe shooting hot exhaust gas - if you look closely enough, you can see a blur on the shadow of my mom's car. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/29.jpg Normally, this is the part where the project would call to an end. It has a fresh rebuild stock motor, with stock turbo, no leaks, no cats, and stock exhaust. It would have been perfect - but yet, my former 17 years old self just wanted more power... and electronics were added... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/30.jpg |
And soon, that turned into a turbo...
http://www.slpin.com/images/more/31.jpg The JDM craze started in me, and I ended up putting on a JDM intercooler, JDM FTP AND even the JDM gauge cluster... Though the original intent of the gauge cluster was to get the factory boost gauge working - just because. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/32.jpg http://www.slpin.com/images/more/33.jpg Finally, at the end, I ended up getting an RE-Amemiya FMIC... http://www.slpin.com/images/more/34.jpg And returned my car to the stock, NA look. The JDM FTPs are gone now too. http://www.slpin.com/images/more/35.jpg I neglected to take pictures of a few things, but other things that are in the car are, HKS EVC, S-ITC, and the new version of the S-AFC was sold in favor of the old one due to money problems. I will be picking my car back up this weekend and bringing it back to school. I am very excited. Yes, excited - first in a VERY long time... |
I LOVE your car
God I wish someone would sell me a rex with a blown engine but otherwise in perfect condition in Miami *hint hint* |
Your car's a skinny anorexic coked up bitch? SWEET!
|
Looks stealthy, I like it.
|

I seem to remember a quote that was something like "You can bust some mad crazy drifts on the downhill" from the one I rented. Plus you can buy the entire series through 3rd stage from ebay for less than the price of like 3 or 4 of the American Dvds. Don't mean to thread-jack though. Awesomely done project, I too wish I could find a deal like that. What grade did you get on your senior project? |
wow..red rex's look like sex.=)
|
Wow nice. What's up with the Mary-Kate thing though?
What is the Kevin bracket? What does it do? |

What is the Kevin bracket? What does it do? Mary-Kate? He's a weirdo. Kevin bracket? It's for helping to mount the tranny when transplanting a manual into an auto chassis car. |
I don't understand the turbo manifold... Who makes a stock manifold like that to replace the stock cast iron unit?
|
Maybe the stock manifold was cracked.
