Project car SCORE, 87 TII, 72K miles
 

I found this 87 Turbo on Ebay in Coos Bay OR and couldn't resist. I won the auction at ~11:30 am Friday and drove down to dolly it home Friday night.

I totally scored (my opinion anyway). 72K miles, one owner. Unfortunately the previous owner drove it so gently that the motor carbon locked and broke an apex seal. The upside to that is the rest of the car is pristine, the paints needs a little rubbing out but is otherwise all original. It has new brake rotors and Toyo Proxes with the "nipples" still on them.

Anyway since it needs a motor I'm trying to decide if I should just get a JDM motor or a Mazda reman.

Give me your experiences on JDM motors you've bought. Let me know the vendor, quality and pricing for them if you can.

I'm not going to mod the car, it is just too nice. It is like a time machine!

Jeff man CONGRATS! :) It is always awesome to find a car in such good condition. I found my car with only 79k I was PSYCHED! lol. So you are going FC? What about the world of FD's?

The J-Specs are either hit or miss from what I have read. Most important thing is getting one that has a warranty. Somebody was selling them on the for-sale section I believe for 900 and it included the tranny etc. Definitley worth checking out. The Mazda Reman. is probably going to be a more reliable bet though.

My first RX-7 was an FC:). When I got married we drove home in a TII that was a spitting image of this car (with 2x the mileage).

You don't actually believe that do you? Did a little old lady own the car before? Thats all BS that people selling used cars say. Anyways give Kevin Landers a call at Rotary Resurrection. He can rebuild your engine and street port it. And don't buy a jspec. Rebuild and port.

What I do believe is that the car is 18 yrs old (6/86 build date) and has 72K miles on it. It is obvious from the condition of the car it has not been beat on what-so-ever. It has the original title with it, purchased new by a lawyer on 9-18-86 with a total of 28 miles on the car. So yes I do believe it.

I also believe the carbon lock story, carbon lock is real and I had it happen to a TII I owned while the turbo was off for repair. Fortunately I saved that motor and it is still running (after 5yrs of storage). I pulled the front plugs on this car and looked into the plug holes with a mirror, one apex seal is broken.

I picked up it and witnessed the guys IMMACULATE car collection. Detomsa Pantera, 60s vintage 300SL ($500K car), 65 Vette convertible, 61 Vette, early 60s Porsche 356 Convertible, and a 60s Mercury with 3 two barrels and actual Mag wheels (not reproductions). All of them looked showroom new.

The 300SL just came back from a Mercedes only show in Jackson Hole and won best of show. It really looked like a new car. I guess Jay Leno wanted to buy it.

So again, I do believe the story.

Nice find-Depending on what you want to spend. You can have it rebuilt, but if housings gone cost will rise. I put a Mazda remanufactured in my '89TII. 9,000 miles now, and it's great. 12mo 12,000 mile warranty. @ $2000.

Where do you get mazda remaned engines for $2000??

dude just pull the engine and send it off to get a rebuild and porting done. it will make you alot faster cause you know that you are going to want to get the car faster once you get started on mods.

just depends on what your plans are.If your going to keep everything stock.I say go with Kevin landers.He does great work and is very fair priced.If your looking to go up with power and money to that big of a problem pineapple racing is the way to go.

Don't listen to the bone heads that say Mod the shit out of it, or PORT the new engine. That only decrease your reliabilty factor and chances that your motor is built properly. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend a Mazda Reman engine. I have had 2 different rx7 with them and they have yet to fail. It will cost you a bit more in the beginning but well woth it in the long run. Especially seeing how you have that nice of a Turbo II . GO MAZDA REMAN.

I'm not going to mod this car, there are plenty of TIIs for that. IMHO it is to original to mod. I'll likely put a DP and a highflow cat and that is it.

A friend and I built a $2002 Challenge car from another 87TII with all original paint. It ran 13.4@105.5 in the 1/4. So I've done the modded route B4. Check out the pics of it.

I've purchased about 8 remans for FDs and have had pretty good luck with them. My local dealer sells remans to me for $2000/ea.

JDM motors sounded interesting but it sounds like they are worth the hassle.
