Problems due to ebay chip?
I just got my 10th anniv a few months ago and after reading these forums, I'm worried the motor is running too much boost and possibly lean. Here's the issue: The guy I bought the car from installed a cone filter and some ebay chip that came with a cheapo mbc. I looked at the ebay auction the previous owner had printed out and the chip was around $10 I believe. So I'm worried it's junk and going to fuck my A/F's. Next thing: I'm pushing 10psi according to my aftermarket boost gauge. My fuel system is stock.
The only thing I can figuer, is that this ebay chip is serving as a FCD? Since my fuel system is competely stock (as fas I know) should I look into upgrading asap? I'm just worried about leaning up when running so much more boost. |
take it to a dyno and check your AFR

^ good idea. Just don't boost too much incase its lean. I bet you will need to upgrade the fuel system, though.

Correct my if im wrong but dont those ebay chips make you runs rich, not lean.

I dunno, but I suspect it varies depending on the chip. Considering hes running 10 PSI and hasn't blown his engine it seems more likely that its rich. Either way, its best not to boost until you know for sure. My personal recomendation would be to get a factory ECU, an SAFC or similar, and a FCD. If you have some electrical knowledge and some free time, you could get a megasuirt.

I've got a narrowband a/f gauge, and according to that, I'm running rich in boost (thank god).

Well those ebay chips are crap resistors you can get at radioshack for .10. so....... But they actually tell the engine that the air coming into the engine is colder than it really is. I would ditch that resistor.

you can run 10 psi safely with the stock ecu, fuel system as long as you dont experience fuel cut dont boost more than that. for the mod chip as log as it is not making it lean out at full throtle your ok take it to a dyno and find out with its wideband.

I wouldn't trust your narrowband AFR gauge... get it tuned on a wideband... THEN you can think about referencing a narrowband.

yes fuel cut is 8.5 psi but he sais his chip elliminates fuel cut
