Problems after installing MOMO steering wheel hub
 

Hi guys,

I've been scratching my head on this one quite a bit. :scratch:

I just finished installing a new MOMO steering wheel hub on my 89 TII (JDM/RHD) and now my steering has no more return. The steering is so stiff and it will stay in whatever position I turn the wheel. I didn't have this problem with the factory steering wheel.

The installation seemed pretty straight forward; that is, remove old wheel, install new hub, and install new steering wheel. Is there something that I could have done wrong to cause this major stiffness? :dunno:

Maybe the plastic turn signal piece (the round thing that fits to the hub and the turn signal unit) isn't aligned into the hub holes...that would cause excessive tightness.

That was my first assumption as well since I could hear the hub rubbing against the plastic surround... so just to rule this out I removed the plastic surround completely but unfortunately this didn't fix my problem. While there's no more rubbing against plastic, the steering wheel is still extremely stiff.

overtightened the hub mayb? i dont think it needs to be super tight consider it has splines but try that.

is the hub FOR the FC? the 1st gen/miata one is different

No, not the trim surround...the piece that fits between the hub and the turn signal unit on the steering column.

The two nubs on the front must mate with two holes in the back of the Momo hub and the two nubs on the backside fit into recesses in the turn signal unit.
If all this isn't aligned, you're crushing the part (it's plastic) and adding a bunch of tension to the assembly.

I had to do some minor grinding of mine, it was tight and mine was a direct bolt on, no hub needed

you probably tightened it too much

yup, its to tight.

loosen the nut 1/4 turn at a time until its smooth.

i did the same thing when i installed my momo hub.

There's a specific torque on that nut, you generally can't go wrong torqueing it to that number. +1 on the turn signal ring though. I did the same shit the first time I installed a hub on my fc. I broke that part though :D After I removed the broken pieces steering was fine.

Awesome - thanks for "steering" me the right direction! It looks like the nut was too tight!

I have another question though. I never connected the horn. There's 2 wires on the horn button; however, there's only one connector on the actual hub. Seems like I need to connect one of the wires to ground. Any idea where the other wire goes or where I can connect it?

the two wires should be individual for each horn button on the stock wheel. the hub should have a wire that connected to the AM horn button and a slot on the button for your other wire. just put one of those on the other jack thingy.

this probably made no sense..

There should be two prongs on your horn button, one wire comes from the hub, and you can take either one of the wires from the stock tree and put it on there. it should work after that.

Thanks for the clarification... but I don't understand what you mean by the 'stock tree'. I found the wire on the momo hub and that one is no problem.. but I'm not sure where to connect the other wire on the horn button. I believe it's looking for a ground connection because I touched the other wire on the steering shaft on the streering column and the horn worked. If you could clarify for me that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again in advance!
