Presilencer vs. Bonez cat sound

I have the bonez hi-flow cat currently with a racing beat header and dual bomz ebay mufflers and its pretty damn loud.... now I really don't care, but my neighbors have been giving my parents shit (btw my parents also don't care). So my parents want to get them off our backs and asked me if there's a way to quiet it down that they can pay for (within reason). I was thinking that the racing beat presilencer might be a good way to quiet it down a little more.

My question is, will the presilencer quiet the sound down more than the bonez hi-flow cat? It really seems like the cat isn't restricting at all and my exhaust is crazy loud, so I was just curious if the presilencer would work better. Thanks for any input.

I have the Bonez Racepipe with presilencer. I doesn't seem to be very loud unless I open it up. It doesn't bother my neighbors, of course I have 4 acres of land. :p: Hope I helped you out.

It has been my experiance that the cat will be much quiter than a presilencer.

Maybe a stock cat, but the bonez high flow cat isnt exactly the same... From other comments on this forum I've heard people say that it is definitely louder than a stock cat. That's why I'm asking the difference between that specific high flow cat and a presilencer.

How do you drive in the neighorborhood? How about not going over 3k in the neighborhood. just drive slowly so your cars isnt as loud. thats what i do. your car cant be that loud driveing at low rpms.

i had the bonez hi flow cat with a Corksport catback.
The bonez race pipe w/ presilencer is louder than the high flow cat. Get some silencers for ur mufflers.

I switch back and forth between a 5 year old RB presilencer and a generic large cat at inspection time.

Stock mufflers.

It's louder than stock but I really can't hear a significant difference between the presilencer and cat.

Most of the increase in noise comes from the header. The stock exhaust manifold does a lot to reduce noise.

My house is the first one when you enter the neighborhood and a hill leads into it. So when I'm coming home I coast out of gear, and when im leaving I dont usually go above 2k. Trust me my neighbors are seriously just crazy... this one guy doesnt work, his wife does, and he has taken it upon himself to be "in charge" of the neighborhood cuz he has nothing better to do.

Unless they get several neighbors together and actually SIGN the letter, I'd say FUCK 'EM! I live in the hills and have a nearly uncorked rotary driven every day! Fuck em! (i.e. "nearly" means dual 2.25 pipes with blown glasspacks merging to a 2.5 Thermal)

Tofuball 03-27-04 06:42 AM

If he is just complaining to comlpain, and no one else cares, why should you? Just make sure you're not coming home really late at night or in the morning, waking people up! Yeh, the nice thing to do would be to quiet down your exhaust, but seriously, if you arent actually being that loud, and not waking anyone up, then it's your car, do waht you want.

ddub 03-27-04 02:11 PM

Yah I agree but my parents asked me if there was anything I could do just to get him off our backs. If there isn't they told me to not worry about it.

snub disphenoid 03-27-04 05:40 PM

I would've gone with some different mufflers...

Tofuball 03-27-04 09:28 PM

He's right, the mufflers themselves handle the bulk of the noise reduction (thus the name) I wouldnt rely on a pre-silencer to clear it up as much as you'd want.

KiyoKix 03-27-04 11:23 PM

I agree, I believe the cat will be quieter than the presilencer (I have the same kitty as you...it's not loud at all really to me :)). Also snub and tofu hit the nail on the head when they say the mufflers should probably be the thing you should change. Bombs aren't exactly known for making an exhaust "quiet" they're made for exactly the opposite. I'd just change those with something quieter if you change anything at all.

totallimmortal 03-27-04 11:58 PM

i had the bonez high flow cats, the version with 2 cats and it was very quite

ddub 03-28-04 12:41 AM

mmm yah i know the mufflers are prolly the reason its so loud, I'm not dumb. I bought ebay mufflers because I wanted that style, didn't have a ton of money, and figured the Apexi's weren't that much better in any way. I'm not going to replace the mufflers, I'm just looking at other options, if there are any.

Verbal 03-28-04 08:12 AM

Like i said, it has been my experiance....the cat is not as loud. I have used many high-flow cats. Catco, Bonez, Thrush.....They will be quiter. Even high flow cat's don't have the straight through design as a pre-silencer (rednecks call them glass-packs).

If you want to quite it down, use both;) The cat and the presilencer.

Tofuball 03-28-04 09:24 AM

If you wont get rid of the mufflers, and you already have the car, I belive your best option is to weld mufflers into the split-pipes of the Y-pipe. People like the Borla XR-1 for that.

I seriously doubt you'll get the silence you want with just a cat or presilencer though. If it helps anyone else reading this thread to decide, a pre-silencer tends to cost half as much as a cat, and let just a tad more noise through.

snub disphenoid 03-28-04 12:11 PM

Perhaps you could use a Borla XR-1 in the place of your cat?
