power steering is pissing me off.. please help!
checked my fluid.. it was low.. so i added more.. got it to the right level... but its still happening...
when i turn.. i hear a light scraping sound... only when i turn does this happen.. the steering feels fine... but its kinda annoying.. you wouldn't be able to hear it unless you were listening.. but unfortunatly... i cant help but do just that. p.s. its not a loose belt.. and they are new.. lemme know what ya think! |
does the fluid level stay at the top??
or does it go back down after a short drive? |
lol, take it off and cap the holes, or get a manual rack. power steer pissed me off to, the computer kept beeping, then lines were leaking, i like it way more without the pump even there, it makes it alot easier to work on the engine
|
Have someone turn the wheel lock to lock while you kneel down near the car and try to identify the source of the noise.
Could be many things. Tie rod ends, bearings, struts, sway bar bushings, wheels, strut bearings, steering rack, etc. |
its odd...
its worse when i just start the car in the morning, than if i drive it after being warmed up and driven for 30 min plus. this is really confusing me. |
Does it do it if you aren't moving?
|
it might just be the pump working. Most cars make noise when you turn the wheel because several things start happening only when you turn the wheel.
btw, are you sure it isn't the tires scraping the ground ;) |
mine did the same thing when i turned it was making a annoying noise so i got pissed off and took the whole thing out i like it better without power steering
|
if it only does it while moving then I have $5.00 that says its the dust shield behind the rotor.
|
it does it when i am not moving... but not as much...
|
So did you do as I asked? That would be the first step in troubleshooting.
|
well.. the fluid that i added is still there.. and it seems to me like it is coming from the power steering main unit for lack of a better term.
if i chose to remove the power steering... can i just unbolt it, and plug all the lines? |
If you are going to remove the power steering, do it properly.
This means swapping in the manual rack, and removing the power steering pump, lines, cooler and computer. Don't just remove the pump and plug the lines on the power rack. It will be much harder to turn then the perfectly balanced manual rack, and you may damage it long-term (thus creating an unsafe vehicle). |
Sounds like you have a sticking valve in the rack itself, may need replacing.
