Power Steering Delay when turning right
 

I just picked up a used power steering pump and just installed it. When first initializing a right turn, like right when you start to turn the wheel, there seems to be a delay of the pump working. Like almost as if there might be something putting resistance against the steering. It only happens when you first turn the wheel right, after the delay is gone it works properly. Turning left has no delay whatsoever and has no issues. I've been driving without the belt on cause my p/s pump was shatting itself to death making loud banging noises. Its been maybe 3-4 months i've been driving like this and I cant remember if this was a normal thing with power steering. Also, was it a bad idea to keep driving without the belt on even tho the hydraulic lines were still attached to the pump :D???

No, it's not a "normal thing".
I'd guess that during the time you ran pumpless that air got in one side of the rack...but this is just a guess since I've deleted PS in both my cars.
Still, it's worth looking into.

Sounds like something worn out or in a bind. Possible air in the lines. Fc is such a light car the manual steering rack feels great. Plus no power robbing.

it shouldn't be a problem with the pump, or air in the system, as both would be common to turning either left or right. it's probably the rack

mmmm, problem resolved itself. it just started working fine and the resistance/delay is gone, for now i guess lol. thanks anyways guys.

It fixed itself by bleeding the air out of the rack.
Hydraulic systems are funny like that.

hmm guess it maybe was air. odd that it would only effect one side though

yeah, i figure thats what happened.

right? thats why i was totally confused, i dunno. its working great now, and feels way better than my last p/s pump before it died.

Look at the hydraulic circuit and you'll see that behavior is not odd at all, pretty normal/expected actually.
