I just hooked up an after market head unit. What do I need to get to make the power antennae work?

Can you be a little more specific? What kinda of relay? How to hook it up?

Some aftermarket head units come with a wire that is supposed to activate the antenna, like I have a pioneer that wored. Other times you will need, as Icemark stated, to put a relay into the circut. Another thing you could do if you dont want to bother putting in a relay is just put a switch in that you can flip :-p

You need a standard DPST automotive relay (found at most car stereo stores, radio shack, and even mazdamark.com)

With the relay you need to invert the signal. Most aftermarket radios have a 12Volts+ signal to activate the amps, and power antennas.

With the pre mid 90's Mazda products, they use a ground or negitive signal to activate the stock power antenna.

So (again:( sad) looking at the bottom of the relay it will have 5 pins, numbered 85, 86, 87, 87a, and 30.

For wiring into a Mazda you will have the 12 + power antenna signal from the radio to 86.

Ground to 87 and 85.

And the Mazda stock power antenna trigger wire to 30.

Mark's number are a bit different to mine, but both will work exactly the same.

TKE - Just in case you're not too knowledgeable with electricity, what you need to do is to GROUND the wire coming from the antenna. Most cars require 12 volts to be sent TO the antenna, but our cars need to have the antenna wire grounded to make it operate. That's what the relay is doing. It takes the 12 volt signal the head unit sends out, (for other cars' antennas) and uses it to operate the relay, which then grounds the antenna's wire.

Yeah, you could use that as well, although $12 + shipping is very very very expensive.

I sell almost the same thing (without the wires) for only $7.50 + shipping (http://www.mazdamark.com/prod01.htm) and I doubt that the wires are worth $5 more.

so i rewired it as stated and now the relay clicks and all and after engaging the thick brown and white wires on the antenna have 16-18v or so... but no motor.. think its blown?

i take it back damn this is weird, the blue line with the yellow stripe has 12v well more like 18v,

if i ground that isnt it shorting out something? i tried it and the relay clicks, when not grounded everything has voltage (all the wires at the green relay)

ok noone answered so ill be more specific.

at the antenna connector i severed the blue wire with a yeallow stripe, the one that everyone says must be grounded for the antenna to function, i connected the other 3 wires at the white clip. when i put a voltmeter on the blue/yellow wire, i get voltage, when i ground/short this wire the green relay clicks. it seems regardless of the blue/yellow wires grounding i have voltage at all 8? wires at the green relay. maybe there is a way to bypass this relay altogether with a standard relay? anyone have a diagram of this wiring subassembly?

The antenna wire from the power antenna is a 12volt looking for ground. When the 12volts goes to ground it activates the relay. It would meter as a positive voltage signal wire until grounded.



And if you have 16-18 volts then you have either a mis-calibrated meter or your car has serious electrical problems.

so if no action my motor is worn?

its not siezed cause if you slowly push the antenna in you can hear the motor spinning.

and yes the meter needs to be reset. my other voltmeter reads it fine

Probably a broken mast, not a bad motor. It takes a lot to burn up a Harada motor.

wouldnt i hear the motor turning then? the only sound i get is the relay clicking, the motor only moves when i push the antenna down, and its not the sound of a motor turning under electric power, its the sound of the gear spinning on the toothed mast as i push it.
