Possible tranny problem, NEED HELP!

Hey all. First post but i've been trollin about here for a longass time ;)

I've recently purchased a manual '86 N/A FC, and also recently noticed a strange problem. I've done a quick search on this site and a few others, but havent really worked out what the problem is.

What I get is when it is idling i get a 'whining' or 'whirring' sound (not sure how to explain it exactly) when the clutch is released. When it is depressed the noise goes away. I've read that it could be transmission bearings worn out (which would require a new/rebuilt tranny ). I've yet to test the amount of fluid, not exactly sure how to as well...

Another query i have is that the previous owner got it ported. He claims a peripheral port but it doesn't seem that big to me. Is there such thing as a mild PP? It idles around 1 - 1.5rpm, no brap brap but the idle is lumpy. What could it be?

Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Yup - that sounds like gear/bearing noise.
Some is normal, but it could have the origonal Japan oil in it.
The best thing you can do for the transmission is change to Synthetic Gear Oil.
It's the closest thing to magic for your gearbox.

A peripheral port would be easy to identify, you'd have a custom manifold with runners that go into the housing themselves, and you'd surely not be having it idle around 1-1.5k rpm :)

sounds like your throwout bearing man. you can pick one up for about 10 or so bucks. and u prob have a aggressive streetport with 4 port housings. i got a friend with that setup and his sounds kinda lumpy. no brap brap!!! lol

I have the same noisy tranny as yourself. I have not yet had time to check the fluid either but I really think that is my issue. I dont think I will be going with synthetic this time around. After reading some of the posts about redline I have decided to just stick to good clean gear oil. I will post results asap.

Say what??? Redline is one of the most prefered tranny oils for our cars, what threads have you been reading!? Oh, also, check the pilot & thow-out bearing!
