Is it possible to swap the emissions harness without pulling the dash?
 

My emissions harness on the project car is *not* in good shape. It's torn up, hacked, and generally not something I really want to leave in the engine bay. I have a good condition replacement harness in the back of the car, but it appears that replacing the harness either involves miniscule hands, or pulling the dash. Is there some trick I'm missing, or is it easiest to just pull the dash to swap the harness?

Also, where exactly does the water temperature connector fit in? I've got the two-prong one hooked up to the back of the water pump, but the one for the dash gauge goes... where?

you can pull the engine harness w/out pulling the dash, but the other harness needs the dash pulled to get it out

The EMISSIONS harness, the one with the fuel injector plugs, water thermosensor plug, water temp sensor plug, afm plug, boost/pressure sensor plug etc, does not need the dash removed.

To me it's a pain in the butt though. You have the two plugs on it that go to the ECU and also have two other yellow plugs on it in the passengers side that go to the FRONT harness. Those two that interface b/t the Emissions harness and the Front harness feed the alternator. water temp gauge etc.

There's also a couple of smaller plugs that interface b/t the Emissions harness and the Front harness, like the atmospheric pressure sensor plug. Talking series four car.

To be precise about the water temp sender wire that goes to the gauge......it's a Yellow/White wire at the sender, then goes to a large yellow plug in the passengers foot well given a reference designator of X-16 or FEM-02 in your FSM, then to a plug for your dash called C-03, then splits off into two plugs, one white, one black called C-01and C-02. at the back of the combination meter.

And to be PICKEY.....the engine harness runs on the left side of the engine and feeds things like the coils and the cas and starter.

If I was a broad, I'd be a bitch. As long as Syonyk (spelled it right this time) knows that that harness on the engine that goes to the ECU also has plugs on it inside the car that mate with the front harness, then all is well.

Personally.......I HATE removing the emissions harness from the interior to pull my engines. I find it easier to remove the intake and remove the harness on the engine and just lay it to the side rather than work in the interior taking the plugs off the front harness etc. If I'm taking a engine out its most likely the intake has to be removed for disassy later anyway.

Wiring diagrams for a 86-87 will show a letter next to each plug/harness. It will have EM for Emissions harness, F for Front harness and E for engine harness and R for Rear harness.


The 88 manual is different. It uses ref designators like FEM-01 which would be a mating plug for the Front to the Emissions harness. But who cares about those 88 cars.
