Porting wastegate
this may be a dumb question but...
is there a link(preferably with pics) that shows you how to port a wastgate? i recently got an S5 Turbo to replace my old unit and i wanted to do that to it while i hadnt installed it yet. i just dont want to screw up and maybe port TOO much. thanks! |
And here's a dumber question... What does porting the wastegate actually do? I've heard people tell me that it allows it to bleed more boost pressure so you don't have to worry about boost creeping too high, or something. The guy who sold me my car threw in an extra stock turbo with a ported wastegate, and I'm going to swap it in soon, so I just want to clarify what it's actually going to do. :p:

It will make it so your car will not spike when more air is flowing through the engine. more airflow + small wastegate hole = more boost.
more airflow + big wastegate hole = boost held down at stock levels. |
Theres a thread floating around, that has a link to another thread where some guy showed how big he ported his wastegate.
Found it. https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=155100 |
for a clearer explaination...
the wastegate is what leaks access boost pressure out when you've reached a certain level of psi. for instance. your maximum stock boost level is like 8 psi. So if you were driving wot in 3rd gear- when you reached 8 psi, any extra pressure made by the turbo your wastegate will open to relieve the pressure. Now. if you have for instance, more air flowing through the turbo than normal conditions (modifying intake and exhaust) you may be moving too much air for the wastegate to relieve. Therefore creating boost creep. So to help prevent this, most people will port the wastegate so that it may bleed more pressure incase of higher air flow - Helping reduce the liklihood of boost creep. It's a very smart move. -Kanaida |

Here's some pics of my wastegate (ser 4). I haven't tried it yet though.
