Porting my 13B?
 

I am trying to think of cheap ways of increasing the power of my 88. Is it possible to port the motor myself? If so, what will I need to do in order to avoid screwing up the housings?

Any on-line how-to guides that you know, link me to em and I will read on my own at that point.

Porting is a very tedious job, and can have a very expensive learning curve. Plus, if you do the porting wrong, you could end up with less HP. I used porting templates for mine. I talked to pineapple racing up in Oregon, and they would port my motor if i shipped them my steels and housings. SRmotorsports also does porting.

I wouldn't mind sending out the housings, but there isn't a place near MI and I would like to get it done faster than most of the shops can do.

Ship to them, wait a couple weeks in line behind other work and then do it, send it back. A month disappears all of a sudden.

Would all I really need is a template, a dremel or other device and a rebuild kit from Atkins possibly to do this right?

I've heard a mild street port along with larger injectors will yield a good shot of HP without sacrificing engine life.

My only question is should this be done along with new Apex seals/rebuild kit time? If you open the motor with used apex seals with they properly seal when you put it back together?

Anyone know?

Mazdatrix has a great write up about porting 2nd gen NA's. They suggest using turbo housings due to a sleeve in the exhaust port in the NA housings.

The sleeve comes out just fine. All that you must keep in mind is that porting affects the timming of the car, so if it is done wrong you might have a hard time getting the car on the right timming settings. So make sure you use racing beat templates (they are the best) there are also some tricks on the inside curve given to the intake port. So have someone who builds fast track proven engines. Not someone who says things and does not proof a thing. For example mazdatrix says a lot of stuff about engines but... How fast does their car run? Not fast at all... Think about it.

Why does Racing Beat not offer porting templates for a 13B 6 port?

Porting on a 6-port is very "tricky" and requires skill acquired from years
of experience. Since the performance gains are fairly small, and the risk
for damage to the housing great, we do not undertake porting on these
engines unless it is a 100% race application.
