ported tii $6000 from dealer

I recently test drove a "ported" tii at a local dealership. It was wet out and broke loose in 1st and 2nd. 3rd didnt feel aggressive at all. It idled from 1k to 1.5k but it wasnt a fast brap brap is was more of a steady brap...brap...brap. It has an safc and afm and the boost guage was reading around 7lbs under full boost. it has no paper history. I wanst impressed at how much it pulled in 3rd. I will test drive it again when its dry out. How do I know what kind of port it is and if it is done right? How much is it worth?

You can only only tell the port if you pull the engine apart. How many miles on the car? Engine?

sounds sketchy

Sounds very sketchy. Anything idling over 1k is hiding a problem such as a vac leak or other issue. Even large streetports will idle nicely under 1k.

I personally wouldn't buy a modded car, regardless of where it's from.

No stock turbo car will feel strong in 3rd and higher, especially at 7psi. I wouldn't sweat the idle (maybe it just needs adjustment) but do check how much vacuum it pulls ~800rpm, should be 14-18. Vacuum leaks are no big deal, just make sure it has good compression and it doesn't smoke.

I know it's a dealer, but at $6k it should have a good interior and exterior. I think the value of clean T2's is increasing a bit though as they become more rare. I wonder if n/a-->turbo conversions/T2 swaps are about to outnumber real turbo II's still on the road?

I think i saw ~90k on the odometer, no idea about the engine. The car isnt stock it is supposedly ported. How would a ported fc idle if they messed up on the port job? I dont remember how much vacume it was pulling at idle. Sketchy for sure. how much is it worth in its current state of sketch haha

if the dealer cant fix it it is probably a bigger issue than you wanna deal with, or they are more shady/ greedy than the typical dealer and you dont wanna deal with that.

but as you described probably not worth more than 2200 to me. pics would help though.

How does the dealer know that the engine is ported?.
Opinion: I would be real hesitant to buy a "modified" car from a dealer..they may not Even warranty anything at all..(SIX Thousand?..holy shit..get a Stock TII and build your Own "reliable car".That way you Know what kind of Modifications are in it.).

$6k is quite a bit for a stock turbo car.

i've seen some decent 7's with twice the power sell for that.

I agree with Karack.

100 percent.

Look elsewhere for a car.

Idling from 1K to 1.5K? Obviously a problem there. Vacuum leak, TPS, etc. etc.

"Ported" could mean anything. For someone trying to sell the car, port matched intake manifolds could be "ported". Unless there is some documentation then assume a stock port.

Experience can often tell if an engine is ported based on how much vacuum is drawn. Do you know how much vacuum the engine draws at 1K?

RotaryEvolution 01-31-10 01:47 PM

vacuum is also relative to compression, but you knew that.
