porcorn noise on idle
 

cold , warm, and hot at idle there is a what sort of sound like a popcorn sound. but with a deep sound (because of my exhaust) what could cause this to happen. i happens like at least about every second and sometimes every 2 seconds. its annoying when the car is cold and the popping is louder. but when its warmed up its still kinda there but faint. i own a series 4 turbo 2 with some mods..
im guessing its some thing to do with my emissions crap.. im planning on taking it all off as soon as it gets warmer. any help guys on what might cause this popping sound.

you might have detinated you turbo, check that first

Hey bro, i think you are refering to the imfamous rotary skip. I think just about everycar thats not runing Standalone has that skip. I know for sure all of the ones i have had/heard have it.

so it's a normal sound then?

Mine pops randomly all the time at idle. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrblarrrrrrrrblarblarrrrrr....etc etc

Ditto, popping is a good thing to me :).

Afterburn, that's normal. As long as it's only periodic, every couple of seconds you'll hear a little pop.

wow. im starting to get the idea that this is very common.. phew. for a sec there i thought i was alone here.. but i guess ones rx7's problem can also be found on most rx7s.. but as for the pops are there any cure to this.. since i heard also that ems will solve lots of these little problems

It's a symptom of an incorrectly set idle, bad timing, bad idle mixture, or fouled plugs. Or maybe all of the above.

A car that is running properly will not be "popping" or missing at idle.

Should I consider myself lucky??? I have no random skipping In the rpms. How are your plugs?

ahh. i see, well if this is true. then this could be the light to my problem..

see, ived talked to some s4 t2 experts that some cars will tolerate to run fine without a tps sensor. and as it is. im running without one, and as for the idle set part its done correctly. sitting on 750 no bounce what so ever, but as for timing. i still havent gotten around that just yet.. i will have to use the search button for this one.. not unless some one can help out and do a little quickie proccedure for me.. im kinda new on setting the timing on these cars. or any car..

LOL.. my car does this before it warms up.. I had a female freind walk up to me in the parking lot after work when I was warming it up and say..

"Jon.. you car is farting"

I for one thank the good lord every time I hear the popping noise... It indicates my rotary beast is still running.

Could be an exhaust leak. Mine makes a tapping kind of sound at the downpipe due to an exhaust leak.

Unless your car is ported it should not skip or pop at idle. Removing all emissions can make it happen. Doesnt necessary mean there is something wrong. However the idle should be strong and steady on stock ports.

hmm . i wonder what the hells our cars is problems.. since its so common. to have these symptom. i would like to know what would cause the pop..

nah im for sure it aignt that. for i have a rull straight exhaust system. thunder fab dp and corksport cb.

I am familiar with the sound you are talking about and I have tried many things to stop it as I didn't think it should happen you know? My engine is ported but I recently adjusted the idle cam on the back of the intake and it fixed the problem. The cam wasn't seperating completely from the roller when the car was fully warmed up. It was a bear to locate and see (very small mirror required) but now I have a nice smooth idle and no popping. Well, smooth except for a tranny mount I need to replace. Ahhh, it's always something.....

That and the little rumble from the exhaust when you rev it up and let off... :D.... love the sound of my car! :)

Don't know, mine piffs. Very faint and I can only hear it now that I have a straight exhaust.

when I am idling when warm it almost never pops. when it is cold idling it pops every once in a while. it pops A LOT coming off the throttle.

Your ACV systems could be the problem....the afterburn valve, or the check value.

That is just the begining

You can do an experiment by changing you gas. The next time you get gas, fill it up w/92 (91). Then, the next tank full use 89. I should idle a bit better.

I have experimented with Shell, Chevron, 76, Olymic, etc. My 6-port runs the best on 89 Chevron. No more popping.

If you have high miles on those injectors...it's time to get them cleaned.
