poll: who shifts past the stock redline?
ok i know they call it redline for a reason, but i was just curious as to who gets power past redline and if so, do you shift past that point.
personally, my s5 makes good power out to about 8250 so i stay in it that far at least in first gear and sometines second (i know, my tranny loves me.). so if you are shifting beyond what mazda thought was appropriate what mods if any led you to that power band and hase this over revving led to any dissasters? |
tach redline does not equal engine "redline"... my tach, however, ends at 8k, so i won't exceed 7500 or so... mine's an s4 but that's obvious
I do alittle, but not alot. Unless you have extensive mods, you arent making power up there anyways.
my s4 makes almost as much power at 4k as it does at 7k, so there's no point listening to the buzzer any longer...
my s4 has no buzzer so sometimes i zing it as far as it will go, but usually shift at about 7k
depends on your setup
but i shift at 7k b/c normally it dies off |
I haven't taken mine past 6k since the rebuild, but it should happily go to the rev limiter once its fully broken in. I dont know exactly what the power band on it will be like, so I may or may not be taking it past the original redline much, just depends on whats fastest. I really like the "rev limit" on my uncle's car - "Don't take it past 12k for an extended period of time, and it wil be fine."
I used to bounce it off the rev limiter.... not good but i did it when i used to drag race but i tried to keep it under 7500 or sometimes 7800.

What is the redline on the s4 NA's? My tach says 7000, but I swear I saw somewhere that it was 7500. Where is the rev limiter? I though it was 8k, but from these posts, it sounds more like its 8500.
Also, I should have specified it earlier, but the car I was talking about wasn't an rx-7. Its a Norwood Ferrari Testarossa with a mind boggeling engine in it. It gets about 935 hp and is fear limited to 220 mph. To get an idea of what this guy does, just check out http://www.bobnorwood.com/ While my uncles car isnt quite as amazing as the cars on that site, its impressive nonetheless. |
heck ive yet to find my rev limmiter i think its 9k as that video form a while back where the guys blew up the 'vertr so beutifuly demonstrated. i think its 8k for s4 tho
I wont go past the redline just because I hate that damn buzzer
If it wasn't there....I'd take it 500rpm past red |
I could never take it to redline, I mean sure it sounds sweet but... I just feel like I'm hurting her so the highest I go is about 6-6.5.
If I'm at WOT, I doubt I could hear the buzzer. If I could, it would be barely noticable.
Get a real exhaust...:) My apex exhaust makes sure i dont hear the buzzer...and btw the redline buzzer actually starts 500rpm before redline... REVLIMIT for S4s is 7800.
There really isn't much point of going past the redline. The HP curve drops at 7500 so wouldn't it make more sense to shift then? But I have gone past my redline and there was no Buzer or light or anything its best kind!
the main thing that determines the powerband (in a nonturbo car) is the engine porting.
edit: by that i mean, no point in shifting past 7000rpm with stock ports, but a street port plops the power peak at 7500 or more. and the more wild the porting (half bridge, bridge, etc.) will shift it even higher. |
Not everyones HP curve drops off there . . . :-p
In my s5 I've gone to 8000 a few times, but had very little power at that point, usually drops off at 7300.
Ive had it to 9k in neutral a couple times to show my buddies it could. :) |
Streetport. I've taken it a little over 8k.
YOu can also grenade the stock flywheel if you take it too far up there, just something to think about, 22lbs of steel spinning at 8K rpms 2 ft from your body.
I've checked it out a couple of times but I try to stay within the limits. Mostly done to impress the ladies and those rotory haters.
i RARELY redline it... but i need it to last forever:)

Any stock car S4 or S5 is not capable of clutch/flywheel shatter.
Although there is no proof....I shifted at 7800 at the track so that my chance was better off to be in the power band in the next gear... BTW ive ran a 14.7 on a stock port motor then...I had a ported motor for a while but that blew and now im on an S5 motor which i have yet to drive. |
