Please explain what this hose does?

I'm in the process of removing the TB and upper intake (surge tank). I have it all loose and can lift it up. However, there is this hose that it attached to it. I have no idea what it is/does. I've looked through the entire Haynes manual and a big chunk of the shop manual and I can't find what it is.

Description: On the passanger side, attached to the firewall is a black circular thing. It is about 1ft diameter. Coming out of is is a hose. The hose is rubber at the bends and metal everywhere else. It travels along the firewall, until about half way across the engine bay. At that point the hose turns rubber and goes down into the upper intake (surge tank). Or atleast it appears to go there.

Any help would be appreciated.

well aside from the misuse of terminologay, I cannot identify your part.

I dont know of any SURGE tank.

You also have neglected to tell us what kind of car you have.

That hose helps the brake booster (black 1' diameter thing) by pumping vacuum to the brake booster under decel.&nbsp This is basically your "power brakes" system...

Thanks Ted, helpfull as always. Brakes were the last thing I thought that would involve. :)

Sniper_X, whip open your Haynes manual, page 135, fig 12.16, item 10. My car is in my sig. I suppose I should have said "upper intake manifold."
