i have heard, even from the real rotary fanatics on here, that the rx7's require lots of tlc and extra care or they will break.i even saw a post where they said,if you buy an rx7 plan to spend as much in the next year fixing it as you did buying it. i have an 86 base,i bought it about 3 months ago, have driven it 10k miles, and not one problem, aside from replacing the thermosat.the car now has 139k miles on it.the ONLY thing on this car that does not function correctly is the ac. i just want to know if this car is just a freak of rotary nature? or are there rx7's out there that with regular oil changes and regular cheap maintenance, run for a long time.

the non turbo rx7s can last pretty long if you take care of it but i doubt you'll spend a lot of money

but the turbos do cost a lot to keep running.... i know by first hand

SonicRaT 07-13-03 04:06 AM

As long as it's well maintained, they're not as picky. And once you add that turbo, well, might as well sell your house. Normal maintanence goes a long way on these cars, and they don't take kindly to abuse.

cool

i heard horror stories about these cars.but after driving it i still had to have it,even though i probably paid to much 2k!.but it was from my brother, and before him my other brother owned it,and they are both mega-anal about upkeep.so i know where its been. this website can make you paranoid reading horror stories about other cars. where else can you get 140 mph for 2k though? my last car was an 87 toyota corrolla,so you can prolly gues this rx7 feels like a friggin crazy race car compared to that. i will probably step up to a t2 in the next couple years, whenever this car eats it. whats the highest mileage you have ever heard on a non rebuilt 13b na?

SonicRaT 07-13-03 04:19 AM

290k miles

introVert 07-13-03 04:25 AM

Whoa, dude. That's pretty far.

would this car be faster if i ducttaped an f-16 roxket engine to it?

Well, given the thrust the F16 engine produces, as long as you double up your duct tape, you're good to go. :)

Most rotary engines will last about 120-150K miles before they start getting weak. Some break prior to that, and some last well after, but 120K-150K is usually when you will notice the seals going.

The RX-7 is very well made. The main reasons you hear about the high maintenance is:
1) Improper care (Over-revving, not changing the oil, not replacing the seals when they are weak, not fixing leaking pulsation dampeners or fuel injectors, not using distilled water in the cooling system as per the factory manual, over-boosting turbocharged engines, etc.)
2) Mickey Mouse repairs.
3) These cars are simply old. Do you really expect to pay only 10-20 percent of the original price of a car that is 12-16 years old, and not have something break?

The old GXl had 249,9xx Miles on it when it shit an Apex on start-up. Ran to redline until the day it died

I agree with Aviator. These cars are just plain old. Other than the turbo cars, NA engines are pretty much bulletproof as long as regular maintenance is applied.

Most of the problems will be electrical problems at most like any other 15 year old or so car.

doesnt someone on here have a na 2nd gen with 330k original miles?
