ok. i know its rusty.. and i know i am missing housing and rotar its a s4 n/a engine i dont even know if i can use it cuz it has rust on it. and it seems to have block seal around it . i can clean that out. it was free. what do ya'll think? is it able to live again with work? |
the irons need to be lapped, the rotors needs some work, and the housing, if there arent any scratches deep enough to catch your fingernail on, then i assume it will be fine.

That is a lot of rust. Surface rust is fine and comes off with fine sandpaper of a Scotch-Brite pad. But there seems to be some deeper rust in the darker sections. If it has pitted past a few thousanths, the iron is junk. When you start lapping newer 13B irons a lot, the coolant oo-ring groove becomes shallow which can cause the o-ring to overcompress and create sealing problems. Any rust on the e-shaft is a big problem as most of the shaft is a bearing surface. Those must be silkey smooth.

That rust would make me REALLY nervous. I think you could probably salvage the rotor and rotor housing though. The irons seem to have quite a bit of rust on them though. Just my .02

there is definetly SOME good parts in there....
for certain if you took your existing motor in conjunction with what you have there you could piece together a nice rebuild.... but hey - free.99 - what can I say? |
I wouldnt play around with those parts with the rust and all, just look into getting a jspec or a 6port motor thats together.

the rotors and maybe the housings are about all i would bother with out of that engine.
you can get good used irons for much less than it will cost you to lap those and lapping must be done by a professional rotary lapping shop. |

the coolant passage for the flow to the throttle body looks mangled on the rear iron.... |
that passage usually isn't in great shape, as long as there is some good metal to clamp onto it still should be fine or it could be drilled and a pipe plug installed. ;)
but the irons in that shape, there most definitely will be some pitting. |

eww that is gross .. those sidehousings that is... those thing looks like toast... and i think plate lapping is bad... mazda spent years developing those coatings.... why take them off... thats just my POV ....ive seen lapped housings eat side seals...

there is good usable parts still, they just will need some attention.
the rotor gears can be cleaned with a brass brush, just don't brush the inner rotor bearing, the bearings probably should be replaced anyways. the eccentric shaft could be taken to a machine shop for some lapping, the rust does appear to be below the bearing surfaces so it should be reusable though the oiling jets will need to be removed and thoroughly cleaned. rotor housings usually can take the abuse from sitting with water in them as chrome does not rust, the only thing to be careful of is pitting in the aluminum due to coolant or water sitting for extended periods without protectant additives in it. |
