Pics of turbo disassembly, To4B Hybrid, WG porting, etc..
 
I got my S4 TO4B hybrid turbo in today..and I had a S5 turbo/manifold laying around, so naturally I wanted to swap compressor housings to take advantage of the S5 manifold and wastegate design. 1st, a quick pic of the S4 Hybrid next to the stock S5 turbo..

Here is a pic of the S5 and S4 manifolds , just in case some people were wondering the difference. The S4 is undivided, and teh S5 has runners for each port.

Next , here is a pic of the disassembled turbo. I took off the compressor housings via the 6 13mm bolts, then just swapped the S4 exhaust housing onto the S5 compressor, and the S5 exhaust housing onto the T04B compressor housing.

And naturally I had to port the S5 wastegate while I was in there.. I can now fit my thumb into the smaller opening. Hopefully I will not have any boost creep issues..

I posted this for one, just to let people who may not know what a turbo looks like internally get a better idea. The 2nd reason is to ask the people who have done this type of thing before if everything I am doing is correct, or give any pointers to anything I am doing wrong.

Thats about the same turbo I have, but I do have an upgraded turbine wheel. Wish I had an S5 turbo/manifold to swap though :( Looks good. With just my one WG passage ported heavily I can maintain 7lbs of boost on my car. You should be fine I'd think.

Thats good to hear. The main reason that I am even going thought the hassle of the S5 turbo is because of the larger wastegate. I've heard way too many horror stories of terrible boost creep with a S4 turbo.
This is pretty much my 1st workings with a turbo, so Im trying to take it slow and teach myself as I go. Just would like some verification that Im not F'in something up ;)

You don't have to do special stuff, like balancing or something ? Cause actually I plan to buy a TO4B compressor and do the samething. What is a good a/r ratio for a fc ?

The assembly will need balaced if installing a new compressor housing and turbine wheel. All that I am doing it taking the exhaust housings off...so nothing in the balanced assembly is being touched. The Hybrid was already built by a professional turbo shop when I bought it.

When you pulled the exhaust housing how much force was needed to get it off? I tried to pull mine a few days ago but couldnt get exhaust housing to seperate with a moderate amount of force. Is it just real tight?

Well..when getting the exhaust housing off, 2 of the 13mm bolt should be hitting the flange for the oil lines, so it kinda pushed itself off as you loosen them.. Mine didnt require much force at all seperate, they just slid right apart....

Now when putting the one turbo back togehter, I noticed that even with the bolts torqued down, I can still grab the exhaust housing in one hand, and the compressor in the other, and twist, and the whole assembly will move.. I know that isnt good, so not quite sure what the problem is there. I will be messing with that more today, so I'll hopefully correct that problem.

Ok thanks! That's clear!

And keep us update about the twist problem of the assembly.

Oh and do you know which a/r ratio is good for compressor upgrade ? I have seen quite often .60, but is there other combination possible ?
