yep

Icemark 12-16-01 10:14 PM

That was the dealer option rear deck cover.

It was kinda cool over the later cover, in that you could remove the rod in the front, and the screw in the back and it folds in half (for times you need more storage.)

It also had two clips, that screwed into the same holes that help the speaker/shock cover on, instead of the later version that had the clips moulded into the tower covers.

BTW: it was about $100 new from the dealer

vaughnc 12-16-01 10:51 PM

Ahh,

The fold in half thing is cool. I'm always afraid someone will lean on mine and tear it in half :) It looks good, but it's WAY to fragile. Good thing I don't hall anything in the 7 :)

I have one of those cargo covers from a 2ed gen for sale,it's maroon.
perfect condition too..pm me

MikeL 12-20-01 10:17 AM

HEY!!!! That's my car! Yes, it is the factory '86-'88 cargo cover. I'm in the process of upgrading to the '89-'91 version of the cover. I have the speaker covers and the rear supports. I still need the cargo cover itself. I think those things cost more like $400 at Mazda. I hope less because I'd like to buy a new '89-'91 version. Somebody buy this thing from me, please.
Mike

vaughnc 12-20-01 11:56 AM

Yep, I paid $400 as my 91/92 TII's was missing. Worth every penny - it looks SOOO sweet.

If yours is in good shape I wouldn't replace it (stay true to your model year).

DroptopRX7 12-20-01 02:51 PM

Mike,
You didn't sell it?? Were you asking too much? $400 or so new from the dealer. Trussville Mazda and that's their internet pricing.

Wow I can't beleive that. Back in '88 when I bought mine it was only like $89+tax at the local Mazda Dealer.

vaughnc 12-20-01 03:50 PM

Mazda is outsourcing their part builds, so it cost more now. Plus shipping from Japan.

AT LEAST WE CAN STILL GET THE STUFF. I hate US auto makers, they don't carry ANYTHING for cars more than 3-5 years.

MaxRX7 12-20-01 04:07 PM

I got an exact one in my 86 GXL, only downside it is weak after 15+ years...

I had to put reinforcements on the bottom to keep the cover from breaking/bending.

t_mak@mail.plymouth.edu 12-20-01 04:27 PM

MikeL, remember the 89 rear cover has 2 black piece on the side of the car that hangs the cover up.

The one in the picture is not stock if I remember correctly. Pacific something did it if i remember correctly

And yes the hatch is 450 bucks. My tab broke recently. Instead of buying a new one, I cut mine off and fix it with glue....

I did not sell it. I was and, am still willing to sell it for $50. What I will sell will allow a complete install on at least a 1986-1988.

Did you mean to have a "S" on the end of the word "piece"?

You wrote "the 89 rear cover has 2 black piece on the side of the car that hangs the cover up."

That is correct. In my process of upgrading to the '89-'91 version of the cover, I have purchased the two side supports. One has a light built in to it and the other does not.

If you could read or, at least comprehend what you read, you would know that mine is the factory '86-'88 cover, not the '89-'91 cover that requires the side supports that you wrote about.

Whoaa Mike, what's gotten into you? I didn't take Tom's (I think that's his name) post to merit that response. May have just been a typo on his part, unless there's a hidden agenda floating around.
What's up??
RW

vaughnc 12-20-01 05:03 PM

Just wanted to clarify:

89-92 has 2 metal cables that attaches to the hatch lid, hooks that go in the hatch lid, rubber bumpers in the back corners, handle in the middle, and of course the carpet/cloth 45degree angle piece that snaps behind the cargo compartment.

PaulC 12-20-01 05:10 PM

I wonder if one could be made like one of the roll up ones found in the backs of some SUV's. That would be convient I think.

DroptopRX7 12-20-01 05:13 PM

Vaughnc, almost correct. They are not metal cables, but made out of cotton or something. They hook to 2 buttons that go into the hatch. The buttons have a square instead of round base that is matched by square holes in the sides of the hatch. Any authentic retrofit will have to incorporate these plastic buttons (for lack of a better term).
It rests on the two side pieces Mike was talking about, one of them with a light, the back fitting into slots in the speaker covers.
RW

vaughnc 12-20-01 05:23 PM

Yep. Anytime I see those speaker covers on ebay with the slots I try to post it here with a "hatch cover upgrage - 1st step" title.

MikeL 12-20-01 06:32 PM

I am sorry that I wrote those unkind words above.

I just get a little upset when I write something and I am not believed. I write as little as possible and then, I expect to be believed. I should not be so gullible.

If I am wrong about this cargo cover, please provide part numbers so that we can get it straight. Otherwise, in my personal opinion, you should not post anything that says that I am wrong.

AGAIN, the top photo shows a FACTORY 1986-1988 cargo cover.

DroptopRX7, go eat your damn chicken and leave me alone :) I'll see you in Alabama in August. I'll bring the chicken!

Mike

vaughnc 12-20-01 07:13 PM

MikeL,

Yep - christmas traffic & last minuet shoping gets everyone upset :)

You might want to put an add on thepartstrader.com if you haven't already along with this BB's buy/sell section :)

I had some fun installing 2+2 seats from an 88 into my 91. I kept the 91 rear deck cover. It was NOT easy (took a full day), and required a bit of fudging/modification. I did manage to keep the 91 cover intact, and even managed to keep the front part buttoned up behind the rear seat.

It would have come out better, I think, if the 2+2 seats were black, instead of grey, to match the black interior of the 91. The main problem is that the rear floor carpet is part of the rear seat, so it's grey, too. Not too noticeable, though, thanks to the cover. It really turned out pretty well.

Sorry, no pics. Damn, I hate not having my cars here....

Ren

vaughnc 12-21-01 09:41 AM

Turboren,

Hey that sounds like a sweet mod. Do the rear seats still fold down as well? Wish you did have some pics :(

Josepi 12-21-01 11:35 AM

I'm very surprised no one has take the time to just make one. A cut sheet of fiberglass, tacky, carpet. Tada. Not as easy as it sounds yes, but not as hard to do either. Could use plexiglass, or any other plastic for that matter (and still be better than stock, which feels like 2 layers of cardboard...)

vaughnc 12-21-01 11:58 AM

nothing like stock though :)
