Pics of my new(wrecked) rx7

I just bought this car (asked for advice a few days ago on it), for $375. Towed it home ok and started some basic work (needs a new radiator first off). Here are the first pics i've got, as we progress maybe i'll post some more, if that's ok with everyone :D

you have a scratch on your front bumper... in the second pic from the bottom... just trying to help :)

Aaron Cake 06-29-02 05:52 PM

At first, I thought "Ouch!". But that last picture doesn't make it look as bad as the first few...Looks like a good project to me.

j9fd3s 06-29-02 06:20 PM

you need to take the bumper reinforcement off and see if the frame is bent or not. do the doors close ok?

mike

dingo 06-29-02 06:37 PM

doors

the driver's door is just fine, the passenger door opens, but the bent metal on the body over the wheel pops when you open it, can be fixed with a quick hammer job maybe, hehe

vosko 06-29-02 06:39 PM

i would say. part it out. then get another car and have a ton of spare parts :)

dingo 06-29-02 06:52 PM

that is an option, but i'm feeling really good about rebuilding this one, i'm a little too optimistic yet to want to get rid of it :) Does anyone have a good pic of an FC engine compartent where the radiator is located? part of the metal is dented where the radiator bolts, and i want to see how it looks in the car correctly.

banzaitoyota 06-29-02 07:08 PM

:D

Here you go this is RAW sheetmetal to compare:

Poppinrex7 06-29-02 07:43 PM

i have an 86-88 front bumper if you want it....

j9fd3s 06-29-02 07:58 PM

i have more experence with stuff like this than i would like to. first, this will cost more than you think it will. there are going to be more broken things you will find along the way. second, you need to make sure that the frame is straight. you may be able to bend the radiator support back to where its supposed to be, but it looks like it should be replaced. that whole part is available, it would probably be about $175ish for the sheet metal. then you have to pay a body shop to weld it on, make sure the car is straight etc. it can be fixed, but its going to take a lot of effort, it might be better to find one with a bad and make that one good. you got a deal on that car though

Hey! Look on the bright side: The coolant overflow is one of the "odd ones" located on the drivers fender instead of in front of the radiator! At least you won't have to replace that... :D

wozzoom 06-29-02 08:08 PM

How many miles are on the car and how far are you going to tear it down? Are you just going to fix the front end damage or go deeper into the engine?

goodspeed 06-29-02 08:17 PM

its fixable...

thats is really easy fixable.

I slammed my car into a bridge @ 25, my car front end looked worse then that, pushed the suspension up, bent the frame end.

After 1 week on the frame machine :), i rounded up one radiator support..(basically half of a front clip, new front bumper, fenders and hood.

Took it to my body shop. 1,100 dollars later, I had a perfect car.....And for people saying, you can never get the front end the same. My front end looks better than new. He used the schematics for my car and the gaps, are perfect...you couldnt tell is was wrecked in a million years....Of course, my mechanic gave me a good deal :)

christi 06-29-02 08:20 PM

Not bad ... could be used for a good project car.

Do you know any idea what the guy hit?

7 Dreams 06-29-02 08:22 PM

Dang man.....that car isn't worth the effort....and I thought mine was bad!

dingo 06-29-02 08:37 PM

the car has ~100k miles on it, the guy is pretty sure it's had 1 rebuild. He rear ended an S10 pickup with an XLT package, with a big ol' trailer ball sticking out. It went in through the front bumper and hit the radiator, the radiator is pretty banged up (running water through it makes little leaks pop out everywhere), it bent the bar where the hood latch attaches (see last picture). There doesn't appear to be any frame damage... urh... for now i'm going to just do front end repair, make sure it all goes ok, after that, i'm going to pull the engine out and do a rebuild. there are a ton of junkyards around here (southern mississippi), and i'm sure there has to be some rx-7's some where. if i can't do anything with the car I'll probably part it out, and look for another one :D i'm really impressed with the 7's and definately want one (i'm still new to this rotary thing)

dingo 06-29-02 08:40 PM

quick question... is it normal for the radiator to slightly be bent in towards the engine at the bottom (the whole radiator that is)?

7 Dreams 06-29-02 08:55 PM

I'm sure you can find a non-running rx7 with a straight body for $500 or less....if you spend enough time looking.

wozzoom 06-29-02 09:01 PM

Very normal. Click here:

third picture down.

dingo 06-29-02 09:12 PM

i see... great thanks. i'm still pretty new to car's in general, besides my main vehicle (94 ford explorer sport 2d) this is the only other car i've ever bought. if anything else, the $375 i spent on this is a good learning tool (cheap shop class! woo!) and hey, i may get it up to a good condition one day

Barb_wire 06-29-02 10:58 PM

if that was not wrecked i would go out side and make sure mine was still there. that looks exactly like mine except mines not wrecked i paid $500 and i droveit home too :D

rxse7en 06-29-02 11:21 PM

Did the previous owner gnaw apart the steering wheel?

Node 06-30-02 12:46 AM

Mine was a better deal ;)
$400
Running almost fine (leaking coolant, had tarred up airbox/AFM)
And has a stupid auto which is being replaced next month (july)
Interior is ok, nothing stained but seats (very blackened on ass parts), and pieces were missing like dummy light surround, radio surround, and most vents, along w/ rear strut tower speaker covers.
I have quite a few of those interior pieces now, and am going on a leak hunt tomorrow, and I will hopefully find it.

Nice color on the car, you rarely see blue FCs :)

Piranha 06-30-02 12:56 AM

Its nice to see someoen trying to put another FC back on the road instead of taking it off and "parting it out." Seems like the more people take em off, the less of us there will be.... like the dinosaurs!!!!!

Barb_wire 06-30-02 02:32 AM

there is a 87 in a junk yard and any thing i need i can get off of it for free.how many miles does yours have on it node??
