phonedial rims
Has anyone painted or polished their phonedial rims?? I have an 86 FC and cant yet justify spending money on rims and tires till i get a number of other things taken care of, Mine is white and i was thinking those old phonedial rims wouldnt be so weak if they were painted black... any suggestions???
|
just do it.
no special care needed for that type of wheel, just sand them down, and spray paint them. who cares if its ghetto looking, the whole idea is ghetto unto itself, so go ahead. (most likely i will be heading down the ghetto way pretty soon) |
get them powder coated. It cost me 35 each for prep and paint. Check them out. https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...postid=2797742
|
no crap, i was looking at your car earlier too... that is cool, i thought powder coating was a lot more expensive
|
just be specific with what color you want. Mine were supposed to be gun metal. They turned out metallic blue. The finish is very good though.
|
they look black in the pics, they will be gunmetal when some brake dust gets on them
|
just go to your local wal mart or auto store and buy:
Aircraft Paint Stripper- might need gloves for this. just spray it on and let it soak a while. maybe a good hour. then use a hose to rinse off the stripped paint. sandpaper - i think maybe 1500 or 2000 grit? or maybe something rough? index cards to block off the wheel from the tire. and then your paint of your choice. probably not as good a quality compared to a powdercoat job but its easy on the wallet and you get some quality time with your baby! |
thats actually what i was thinking of doing, using a good rattlecan laquer on it and a ton of clear, it'll prolly chip but then agian, it might last 6 months till i can get some real rims
|
i would suggest you go with something other than black (dark metallic grey or gun metal) unless you plan on keeping your tires super clean & dark.
|
that will work
|
well, that just throws a wrench into things, i found the reciept in the glovebox from when the guy before me bought these tires...$9.99, its almost agianst everything i am to keep them clean and dark, but then agian, Armor All is cheap, can you get gunmetal in a rattlecan?
|
yep you can. ive seen some at wal mart in the paint section in the automotives. its a blue can called Dupli-color i believe.
|
gonna have to check it out tommorow, this may be a big help on the wallet , and a bit of an ego boost for the thinner walleted folks here. My eyes got big when i saw this car thinking about all the mods i can do, i totaled everything up that would make me happy and it comes to around 4 G's, i need to cut costs somewhere, at least, temporarily
|
This is my car the day after i brought it home, i painted the dials, cleaned it up, tuned it and weeeee!
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2311846 I started with a $1300 car w/ taxes and tags, Spent another 1k on her and besides paint it's exactly what i want, My rims come in tommorrow, the exhaust should be here friday and the springs go on next weekend. Be patient and do a little at a time, |
see, that looks a hellava lot better than the unpolished alum.... makes that into a totally different looking car, for nothing more than beer money, thats it, i'm doing it
|
Oh yours is white well here you go then...
http://www.zaxjax.com/rrrweb/Images/P5160002.JPG 100% better, i like it post a pic when you do yours... |
will do, i will put up a before and after
|
i saw a pic on here somewhere of a guy who did his phone dials like that, but he left a small lip on it, so it had a polished lip on it....doesn't look anywhere near as rice as the flat black does
damn those cheap honda owners! |
Paint them White instead of Black. Miy wheels are ghetto painted white. Theyre 80's aftermarket hyashi racing wheels. I have a set of the phonedial wheels i got for $20.

they can look even smaller?
sweet!:D |
Here is another cheap paint trick.
Mask the bumper & paint the radiator intake grill bars black, like they used to be. Also if you remove the FTP lenses, put the headlights up, mask the bumper about 1/2" in the FTP opening, and paint the inside flat black. |
Here's mine. The previous owner did it I think.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...607_5_full.jpg The car blew it's engine so I might be junk yarding this. If so then I'll post the wheels for sale so they don't go to waste(althoug I'll need some regulars to wheel it over to them) |
sureshot, you got any pics of that? it sounds interesting.
|
FC3S_DRIFT ...DUDE, thanks a ton on that aircraft tip. that stuff will take the dirt outta cement.... i sprayed it on and the cleat coat just pealed off 15 minutes later...almost made the rims look chrome.. i guess thats what polished aluminum is REALLY supposed to look like, thanks agian bro
