Passed smog...with a Haltech and a J-spec
Like the title says, I managed to pass CA smog 100% legitimately today with a Haltech E6K controlling an S5 J-spec motor. I didn't even have to pay the guy to pass visual :D No alcohol, no nothing... sweet :D
I pretested the car before hand to see what it was putting out, and the HC's were a bit high so i went out and leaned it out at 1700 rpm (to 14.7:1... it was a bit rich before) and backed the timing off five degrees (back down to mazda specs), and the car passed with relative ease :) I'll post the results later if anybody's interested. Man is that a relief :) It was pretty funny, too, because I was worried that the car would overheat, so I flipped open the laptop and checked the temps while it was on the dyno and the guy was like "What's that" me: "Oh, it gets a data stream from the computer and displays it, cool, huh?" him: "Neat... that thing registers faster than my machine!" :bigthumb: On top of that I had the wideband display going the whole time, and the guy didn't care :). At one point he asked me if i could program the engine with the Haltech (and he sounded kinda pissed), but I told him "Well, i'm not sure. I don't think so, but in any case I haven't touched it 'cause i'm scared to mess something up" :D Anyway, i'm pretty happy about that. I just welded in a new "car-sound" 3" high-flow cat yesterday and installed new spark plugs this morning, but other than that I didn't do anything special. Now, for that big turbo :D Manolis |
