part swapping questions

al right, I've got an 87 gxl as a parts car with all of the computers gone so staring it is out of the question.

I have an 88 n/a (not sure of what the trim level is but it does not have the adjustable suspension ie 'normal' or 'sport' modes)

I want to use the suspension from the gxl on my other car but want to have it permanently set to 'sport' how can I go about adjusting this without the computer or control panel?

now, my room mate has an 86 gxl that does have the adjustable suspension so I was wondering if I plug in my shocks to his wiring harnes and set them to sport will they reset themselves when I unplug them? or will they stay in sport mode? do they need constant power to stay in sport mode? another issue is that when I look under the hood on his 86, it does not have the wires or pug in's going into the top of the shock towers like my 87 parts car does. is the hook up else where?

next series of questions

I want to use both doors off of the 87 gxl on my 88, but the gxl has electric windows and a different interior skin with some ugly map pocket and crap. I think I've already got the windows worked out, but is it possible to use the interior skins from my 88 on the doors from the 87gxl? and of course I'm ass-u-meing that the hinges will bolt up without issue.

are the exhaust hangers in the same spot for 87 and 86 gxls?

do both the 86 and 87 gxl's have a lsd in them?

can you use the bigger brake calipers from the gxl on my 88 (which is running the 4 bolt set up) without changing over to the 5 bolt wheels? simply put, can I use the bigger calipers on my stock 4 bolt rotors?

thanks for any help you can offer.

Just buy new shocks/springs, those adjustable thingies don't really work anymore.

O.K. I actually read the whole post...

Assuming your friend's AAS system works fine...yes, you can place the actuators on the top of your shocks, switch to sport and pull them off. The actuators just turn a shaft on the shock and stay there. Having said that, there is a extra sport mode that only kicks in when under heavy cornering, accel, or braking. The only way to set it to that is to use a plier or something to turn the shaft. I don't know the exact position though - hopefully someone will chime in.

LSD's - The GXL should have the LSD. With both wheels off the ground, spin one side. If the other wheel spins opposite, no LSD. If they both spin the same, LSD. Also, there should be a tag calling for LSD additive on the fill plug unless removed/lost.

The door stuff swaps over - nothing fancy there.

Exhaust swaps fine, same mounting unless near the tranny if you're going man. to auto trans. or vice versa.

Not sure on the 4-piston onto 4-bolt. The spindle is the same, but you'll have issues with the smaller rotors. Best is to swap hubs, disks, etc. (i.e. 5-bolt swap).

BTW, FSM and more in my sig.

1) Maybe his AAS was removed/disconected? I really don't know but its possibility because most of them don't work anymore. I have seen some great condition shocks and springs on the For sale section for decently cheap.

2) GXL's should have LSD's. But you can double check with what pfsantos said.

3) The front rotors on the 5 bolt are probably bigger then the 4 bolt, so the calipers will not transfer. Do the 5 bolt swap, you will be happier in the end.
