Overheating Problem
 

hi, im new to the club, i just bought an 86 GX model that had a TII engine swapped in by the guy before me, everything went well when i drove it but as soon as i got it home the add coolant buzzer was on non stop, there are no leaks, it runs fine for the first 20minutes or so then it gets very hot. I had it checked apparently it ran fine when looked at. The one thing they said i needed was the TII hood and fan? If i got those would that solve the problem or would i just be wasting money? any help is appreciated. thx.

If you have a turbo motor with the top mount intercooler then you really should have a t2 hood. And a bad fan would cause you to overheat in traffic or slower speeds.

+1. Don't push that car hard at all until you get a TII hood or FMIC setup. You're pumping air that is way too hot into the engine.

If the owner said it needed a fan, does that mean it doesn't have one at all right now? If it does, is it electric or mechanical? Shroud on there?

well everything is stock besides the motor and the downpipe needed to fit, i have a carbon fiber TII hood on the way is there anything else necessary to keep from getting too hot?

Bleed the cooling system if needed.
You may not be leaking; however, you may not have enough either.
That's generally what the COOLING BUZZER will tell you.

If you wanted to spend the money you could get a bigger radiator, turbos will always run hotter than NA's. Don't know too much about rotary turbos but I know the thermostats on most turbos open up at a much lower temp than most non-turbos.

well i carry a bottle of anti freeze in my car and make sure everything is full like i said there is no leaks, however after visiting that website posted, my car has most of the symptoms of the vary last one, antifreeze gushing out of the overflow tank after 20 minutues of casual driving or so, extreme overheating, white smoke coming out of the exhaust, should i be prepared for the worst here, does all that mean the engine needs a rebuild?

are rx7 engines even worth rebuilding or would i be better off to buy a new one, i now have two turbos that both are probably going to need a rebuild, any advice? thanks

Check the probe on top of the radiator. Make sure it is not broken.

Probably not coolant seals nor anything to do with the engine. Though bad coolant seals (i.e., engine needs a rebuild) would be a good reason to sell to a sucker. Just try aaroncake's link and find out for sure. In the mean time: remove radiator cap, add coolant, see what happens. Don't drive it around til you figure out the problem b/c if it overheats then your engine may need a rebuild after that.

i already visited the aaroncake website and it matches word for word the last one and i make sure i ad coolant all the time it just gushes out of the over flow tank... and its not even full...

Ah, are there lemon laws that cover this? You got ganked. Rebuild is ~$3k give or take. You can get a replacement engine for ~$1.5k, but probably not a good idea as a lot of them will need a rebuild shortly after installation.
