overheating/coolant problems
 

my friend has an 86' gxl. he has been having problems with his car overheating. he has replaced so far the waterpump, thermostat, radiator, and all new clamps and hoses. once after car started staying cool he took it for a drive and it overheated very quickly. it has a few times after everything was replaced. behind the waterpump underneath the alternator, the connection between the block and what the waterpump is sealed onto. that is where we heard bubbling and there was a wet spot from coolant leaking out. the owner of the car thinks maybe when his irrate dad ripped off the waterpump he may have broke the seal between the block.please help

Any leak in the system will cause cooling system degradation. What concerns me is the amount of times that car has been overheated. Have you checked the cooling system to see if the car has a blown water seal? Very easy check.. Fill the system completely full (engine cold). Then pull the EGI fuse. Leave the coolant fill cap off. Crank the motor. If coolant comes spewing out of the water neck, you have a blown water seal.

one correction to my post is that the car has never actually overheated. only got just under that H many times very quickly.where is the EGI fuse located?

My 87 had small a leak bhind the water pump housing.
It turned out the housing was corroded through from the inside.
I fixed it with "Bondo Marine Epoxy". then reassembled the housing & pump with RTV sealant.
When I sold the car a year later, it was still good..

i am the owner of the car and it is leaking from the seal under the alternator? i have replaced everything that stupid troubleshooting web page has said to replace aron cake. its not the water pump, fan, radiator, or thermostat. it heats up after about 3-5 mins of driving even after it has sat all night?

try the rad cap test. if it heats up that fast my guess is water seals are gone inside the motor. it should take longer then that to reach normal temps let alone over heating.

the only other thing is maybe the gauge is screwed up.
