overheating!!

i have a 86 n/a rx-7. well this question is pretty simple. My engine is still overheating after a coolant flush and all, the temp gauge reads to about 3/4. could it be the thermostat? fan? or the radiator. what is the most common problem for this 86'er?

Could be all three or any of the three. If I were you I would remove the thermostat completly. See what the results are. I have the thermostat out on two of my cars right now(gonna put 'em back in soon when I get off my dead rear). The needle never gets over the first 1/8th of the gauge, either car. If it still overheats, check the fan. Does it blow pretty good at idle and pick up as you nudge the throttle further open initially? If it does not overheat on the freeway doing 65/70 but does overheat idling, it could be the fan. The radiator? Yeah, it could be stopped up with some kinda sealant someone used to stop a leak with. I had a (still have)an 82 that ran towards hot and I bought a radiator from Mazdatrix and it ran cool after that. Then again, does your car lose coolant(disappear?). Do you refill frequently? Does you overflow tank keep filling up and overflowing? Does your buzzar go off frequently? Oh yes, last but not least the gauge should be suspect also.VERY suspect.

I had similar problem on my 88.Take the water pump pulley in your hand and try to move it, if it moves, changes the water pump because the bearing is bad. That was my problem. After I've change it, the gauge didn't go over half even without a fan. Check the fan-clutch to. Check if it's harder to turn the fan when the engine is hot. If it turns freely at all time, even very hot, change the fan-clutch.

hope it will help
