Overheated, did i destroy my motor?

ok, so I was driving and my heater hose blew. didnt notice it till the temp gauge pegged. shut the car off immediately. let it cool completely. repaired the hose and everythign seems fine power wise. however anytime I hit 6k or higher I get a signifigant amount of white smoke out the exhaust. I havent had the car that long so im not sure if it was doing this before to a lesser degree. Did I blow a coolant seal or something?

Yes. Or possibly a water jacket.

But that doesn't mean you can't keep driving the car, so long as you don't lose coolant while driving (ie, no revving past 6K).

Does it puff any white smoke on start-up? Does the "Add Coolant" light/buzzer come on, no metter how many times you fill the coolant? Does the car fill the coolant overflow bottle even if it's not overheating?

no... yes... yes....

oh gawd!!!

just checked and the car is low on coolant. not really any smoke on startup. where are the coolant seals? This motor was already rebuilt, so if its something not too bad like removing the front cover i wanna do it. whats going to fuck up if i go past 6k?

Coolant seals are located in between the housings requiring engine disassembly to replace. You need to have someone rev the engine so you can smell the smoke. If it smells "sweet" it's coolant, otherwise it's oil and/or gas smoke.

philiptompkins 03-19-06 10:19 AM

yeah, i'd say your gunna be taking the engine apart soon.

If you don't already have an engine hoist, get one :p

The same goes for a good set of basic tools...

And a few speciality tools like a flywheel stopper, remover, etc (unless you've got a 54mm impact socket, and a hell of an impact wrench).

slpin 03-19-06 01:31 PM

^^ or just the 2ft long breaker bar from racing beat and just turn it.
Have you ever taken a flywheel out?

Valkyrie 03-19-06 01:44 PM

Yeah, but the only way I got it off was with a high-power impact wrench at a tire shop :p

It was a real bitch.

slpin 03-19-06 01:45 PM

That sucks = I have always had luck with that bar. Jam a bar to lock the gear... use the bar and pull...

not that its even really relevant to this thread but im a (non-rotary) mechanic for a living and my toolbox and its contents costs more than the car itself. :)

can i continue driving like this or will the oil and coolant start mixing/lose compression/ etc...
