Opinion Needed
 

Hi all,

I'm new to the rotary world. My boss offered me an '87 FC for free...but it needs it master cylinder (clutch) replaced, and one of the fuel injectors is leaking. It's been sitting for about a year, so I'm sure I'll have to drain the gas tank and change the oil. I was wondering if it'd be worth the trouble.

Does anyone know how much new injectors and a master cylinder would cost? I was also told by someone I consider a little more knowledgeable than I about rotaries that if I replace the clutch master cylinder, then I need to replace the slave cylinder and the water pump. Can anyone confirm this?

I'd also like to know if there's anything different about replacing injectors, being that it's a rotary, and where all the injectors are located.

Your help and time is greatly appreciated.

You don't have to replace the water pump if you replace the master cylinder. You would want to replace the slave cylinder since they wear out at about the same rate and your slave cylinder will likely fail soon after you replace your master cylinder.

The injectors are just like any other car, really, and aren't any trickier to replace than any other car.

Assuming the motor runs, it's worth it. The FAQ (stickied at the top of the forum) has links to new buyers guides, which is what you want to become familiar with.

Ditto! Assuming it runs, and even if it doesn't, anything you put into the car is gotta be cheaper than buy an RX-7. If the motor is bad buying a used motor for $500-$600 is a good deal!
Oh and injectors are easy to come by. Look in the "For Sale" section of this forum. Injectors are a VERY common thing.

Turns out my boss was wrong...it's an '85...which unfortunately means that it's a year away from what I want. Alternatively, I have the opportunity of buying an FC (yes, I'm sure this time ;)) for $300. It needs a new pressure plate (so I'm probably going to replace the clutch too). Additionally, I'll need to replace a pulley or something too...I'm not exactly sure which one, but those are the only things. Shouldn't be HORRIBLY hard, since I'm getting the car as a rolling chassis and the motor/tranny separately (from the same person all for $300) and would be able to do the work before putting everything together. I'm PRETTY sure that it's a GXL as well. Anyway...what do you guys think?

I would take the free 85 GSL-SE.

I take up either one or both as long as their body isn't a rust bucket. Overall in the end you can always part the car out get well over your money's worth. Speaking of parting it out...It sad to know that our RX-7 are worth more in parts then as a whole car. Good Luck!

take the free first gen. they are simple, but fun to drive. i love my 79. and get the fc, they are fun to drive to haha. you can never own too many 7s. welcome to the forum and good luck.

Once you start driving an FC, you have an uncontrollable urge to purchase and drive a 1st gen. I want one. I'd take the 85 and turbo the crap out of it.

Okay...here's an update. I have a guy that's giving me an '87 GXL for $300. Body's straight...but the paint's crazy (random colors from body panels being replaced), interior's pretty good. Alas the AS doesn't work...but he's throwing in an official Mazda Service Manual for it.

The only thing wrong with it is that the oil and coolant seals are leaking slightly, so it smokes a little over 4k and a LOT over 6k. How big of a problem is this?

a pretty big problem. You could possibly buy it for $300, part it out, make $800 and put it towards an Fc in better condition.

Can someone be a little more specific on the extent of the problem. I'm sure it's a reasonable obstacle...but is it possible to fix this without rebuilding the whole motor?

no you whould have to take the motor apart to get the seals. and if your new to rotarys then I sugest that you not try to rebuild the motor your self. but on the bright side depending on the miles you chould swap out the motor. then you whould have a good car. but with leaking seals the motor will still run but after a wile the motor will go. then you have to buy and new one anyway.

All I can say... YOU BETTER BUY THAT SHIT! Im close enough that I can drive other there and slap some sense into you if you dont. a FREE GSL-SE... are you fucking crazy! BUY IT!!! Between my n/a FB and turbo FC, I think the FB is much more fun to drive

The GSL-SE's body is ROUGH...The GXL's body is nice but it needs repainted (it's got fenders and bumpers and a hood from other cars). The tranny, driveshaft, and LSD are in good shape, but the Adjustable Suspension doesn't work...guess it's coilovers for me...

I don't really want the GSL-SE...the body's too rough, and I don't care for how they look...if anyone wants it, lemme know. I have an offer for $300...$350 takes it, asuming I can get the keys and title from my boss still. You can't drive it though...it needs to be towed.

I wish someone would give me a free 1st gen. OK, so I wouldn't turn down a free 2nd gen either (have to think a bit about a 3rd...). If you were closer, I know someone who might have been interested in buying the GSL-SE from you, but it's probably a bit far for them to drag the trailer down to get it. :/

buy the gxl and then swap in a reman motor, then paint. if you can get the car for 300 or less, and then a motor for 500-600, you have yourself a good rx-7 for around 1000. then paint it, if the paint is as bad as you say.

If I took my time, do you think that rebuilding a 13B would be too hard? I've never worked on motors much...but I'm not stupid and I'll have a Mazda Service Manual for the car.
