OMP not hooked up..... how bad?

i just found out today that my omp(87 turbo mech. omp, little clip broke and wasn't there) has not been hooked up for at least a couple of weeks, driven at least, 200-300? miles without it. how bad would that be for the engine? i did not push it within that period, normal driving, in cool weather, with coolant temps at about 160-175 if that matters at all. i did smell a faint oil odor that i can now attribute to the omp. are there any tests i can perform to see if the car is still in good condition. just changed oil, with 20w50 around the last time i knew the omp was hooked up.

thanks for any help, still feels strong, acutally car runs really well right now, just installed a new exhaust, and fixed a vacuum leak.....just kinda worried about what i found tonight, i love my baby!

you NEED the OMP it, it lubricates the apex seals! without it there will be very excessive wear on the apex seals and rotor housings! you can run without it IF you run premix. so unless youve fixed it PREMIX FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

Throw some 2 stroke oil into your gas tank if you dont want to fix it. Its not a biggy as long as you are premixing your gas. Throw some premix into the tank and do a compression test to see if an apex seal was damaged.

I'm sure you fixed it after you found it. No, the engine isn't gonna seize up on you and fall apart the next time you drive around the block. It didn't help anything, but for that length of time isn't a killer. Relax, now that you have it working again.

Just make sure you have the actuator rod adjusted correctly. MIne was hooked up but someone put the cotter pin in the wrong hole. Instead of the specified clearance, I had almost a 1/4 ". Which meant the pump was putting out less than half the oil it should at the specified rpm.

...i hooked it back up, i will check the clearance of it today or tomorrrow...

thanks

The OMP is moreso a long-term thing. A short term of not running the OMP with the rod hooked up won't hurt anything.

Just hook it back up and you're ready to roll.

does that mean that you could fill up with just regular gas minus premix if you were caught out in the country and didn't have your mix just to get back home? <-----this is premixing with no OPM

As long as you took it easy, should be ok. Considering the small amount of oil (relatively) that flows into the engine, not having any for a short period is not going to cause any problems. Now I wouldn't be Redlining it every 2 minutes, or driving across the country... I'm sure you get the idea. :)

any one use MMM? i used it about 5 months ago... did really do much, good or bad? i dunno, seems like another snake oil gimmick

dr0x 11-22-02 04:50 PM

MMM? Do you mean MMO?

dra_gon_lee 11-22-02 06:05 PM

lol, yeah marvel mystery oil?

I put in a quart of MMO in my oil on my last oil change. I'm gunna change it again this week and see how dirty the shit is. If its really dirty it probably worked fairly well I think.
