ok swapped out the blown engine for another engine today (still messed up)

so I swapped the engine out of my 88 TII and the car is running like poo.

The engine I put in has recently been rebuilt and ran fine in my 88 last fall.

I think the compression may me a bit low, like 80 or 90 but like i said it ran fine last fall.

basically, it revs pretty freely in neutral but once under load it is nutless.

I did take the cas out of the old 86 and put it in the 88 engine as I notice the wires were munched. So maybe timing is crap?

Also I noticed is has zero oil pressure, maybe incompatibility between senders or something?

Speedometer doesn't work now either???

other than that the clutch has to come way out before it engages, which I assume there is some way to adjust. I'll search for that tomorrow unless someone has a link to a good post on it.

Any help would be much appreciated, I cant keep missing school because of this, so I have to have this thing up and running before the weekend is over.

Oil pressure sending units are the same for all cars, S4 and S5. Make sure the connection is good.
Speedo cable hooked up at the transmission?

Put a timing light on it. Also double check the spark plug wires aren't crossed on the trailing plugs.

The oil pressure sending units are all standard. Check the single wire connection below the oil filter.

As for the Speedo: It's completely mechanical. Did you plug the cable in the tranny?

ok I adjusted the clutch, thats good now.

swapped out oil sending units, thats good now.

I cant find my timing light for the life of me. Any ideas what the timing should be for a street port engine or it is the same?

Also i noticed im only pulling 10in Hg at idle, i know it is a street port and that will effect it but I seem to remember it being higher in the other car. Could this be caused by timing. I dont see any vacuum leaks.

I would suggest that if your ecu was not swapped, check to ensure that it is compatible with the new engine.
Also, if you switched wiring harnesses, check the injectors/resistor packs for compatibility.

Good luck!

I basically just swapped out a turbo keg for a turbo keg

I had a similar problem when I swapped my n/a. Revved and started wonderfully and was a dog under load. Turns out my timing was waaay off when I stabbed the CAS.

Also had problems with my speedo and oil pressure gauge. The speedo read super high and the oil pressure gauge didn't work at all.

Swapped out the guages and now the speedo reads proper and the oil pressure gauge reads super high, lol!

I think you should be able to just put a meter on the sending unit and see if its generating a voltage while the engine is running, specs are prolly in the FSM.

Timing is good, could this be the turbo? I'm really stumped here. Any ideas?

Did you remove the fuel injectors during the swap? If so check to see that the primaries are working correctly. I had a very similar problem after I rebuilt my 87 t2 come to find out somewhere along the way I had sligltly cracked the atomizing end of the fuel injector and didnt notice when i installed them and it was just dumping every time i would give it boost.

ITSWILL 04-19-09 07:03 PM

Mine only seems to really move when I get into boost.

Any more ideas? Im basically tapped out.

This is an engine that ran fine a few months ago.

Compressions is doable.
Can't find any vacuum leaks.
Timing is dead on (unless the street port changes something)
Turbo spins freely.
AFM is good.
TPS is good.

Im really at a loss here.
I think the last thing I can try is to just pull the injectors and see if they spray when I crank it it.

I could also check the for a blockage int the exhaust, although it seems highly unlikely as I have a RB exhaust with no cats. ( like I said, I'm running out of ideas)

check ur injector harness
