OK, my brakes suck. Why?

Just changed rotors, pads, completely changed the fluid and bled them, and still the pedal feels spongy and the brakes feel like crap. I'm assuming it means the master cylinder is shot. What do you guys think?

turbo10th 04-29-07 11:54 AM

Check your lines and keep bleeding them could be your master cylinder but i dont think it is sounds like air in the lines to me.

I went through 2 quarts of brake fluid doing the change, I'm 99.99999999999% positive there is no air in them.

That sound s like a good guess to me. Have someone look into the master cyl reservior to see if there is turbulence when you push the pedal. That would be fluid squeezing back. If not, well bleed them again...

turbo10th 04-29-07 11:59 AM

That is odd yea could be your master cylinder then

ajhehr 04-29-07 12:10 PM

did you get all 6 bleed screws?
sorry had to ask.

junito1 04-29-07 12:14 PM

heh my brakes feel like that too.

They use to feel like that cause my ABS was hella leaking.
So i converted to non ABS with n/a parts but it still feels spongy.

alexdimen 04-29-07 12:16 PM

If you went thru that much fluid. it's probably a bad master.

You only ned to do the bottom 2 bleeders on the rear if you have removed/drained the caliper assembly.

NCross 04-29-07 01:13 PM

brake booster or master cylinder.

i had one like this too.

91 na; new master, front calipers, SS lines... pedal feel got WORSE, we put like a GALLON for fluid thru it too. never figured it out

new car is an 89 base, its been sitting for a long time, fluid is BLACK, pedal feel is great.

why?!?!

JABrx7 04-29-07 01:26 PM

I went through that much fluid just to clear the old, nasty shit out. I think the fluid might have been original. It was that bad.

junito1 04-29-07 02:37 PM

maybe our rotors are just too worn out? Like my front rotors have a NICE lip on the edge where the pad doesnt make contact....

Is this a possibility?

$100T2 04-29-07 02:52 PM

My rotors are brand new, that's definitely not the problem.

Icemark 04-29-07 04:58 PM

what are you using for pads?

How old are the soft lines?

NCross 04-29-07 05:41 PM

hmm the rubber lines could be flexing if theyre worn.

ProjectR13B 04-30-07 06:49 AM

sounds like the master cylinder. i had a similar problem and found out mine was leaking fluid.

Roen 04-30-07 12:29 PM

brake booster vacuum check hose?
