ok i'm a little scared here

its getting really cold out in the the singel digits and possibaly colder and when i start my car it starts like it normaly dose but if i take it over 2 grand before it warms up it makes a sound that is like a high pitch grinding sound that makes me think the apex seals arent getting fully lubed but if i let it worm up for about 10-15 munits i have no problem no noise no nothing

i'm wondering is it that the apex seals arent getting fully lubed untill it has warmed up or is it my altanator belt making the noise or the pully that that runs on because the altanator starts to make a screaching noise if i dont have the belt as tight as i can get it and it seams to keep comming lose

any one got a clue ?

If it's bothering you, just add a few oz of premix to the tank when it gets cold.

tecknomage 12-23-04 12:53 AM

will adding premix cause and problems if i still have the oil being enjected and is there any particular brand of premix ? and any sertiant order in how you add it premix then gass or gass them premix ?

I run strait premix (removed oil injection) and i just pour 1oz per gallon into the take before filling up. You could get away with 1/4oz per gallon or less.

Perhaps an old belt struggling to maintain grip in the cold conditions?

I would have to agree. If you heard a loud 'scary' grinding and it was your apex seals, your car would not be alive right now.
Maybe the temperature change in the block is moving belt pully mounts a few degrees in a particular direction causing the belt to chirp?

'If you heard a loud 'scary' grinding and it was your apex seals, you would not be alive right now.' ........Sorry I coulden't resist.

Anyway, I betcha its a belt. Pick up some belt dressing and see how that works for you.

Or, god forbid, an actual new belt. Geez...

tecknomage 12-23-04 02:57 AM

lol i have replaced the belt 2 times since i got the car and i got it auguest second that isint that long ago

... if you've had to replace the belt twice, wouldn't that be a good clue that something's not quite right?

Have you checked your alternator bearings & water pump bearings & such? With the belt off, spin them (when cold, since that's when you have the problems). Feel for any roughness, and make sure there's no play in the shaft.

Yea, they're cheap, and good to keep around. I currently have 3 of the "critical belt" in my car... 2 on the engine (dual alternator pulley) and one in the back, in case those two decide to part from the engine at the same time.
