Ok, this car still wont' start, gettin weird now

Ok first thanx all for the help, I would die without you!

Here is where I'm at:

The rebuilt engine is in and connected up. It turns over but does not start. I have spark, checked all the coils and they are ok, checked wires to make sure that they spark, got shocked a good bit whilst cheking the wires :), put new NGK plugs in, tried with a new battery. As far as I can tell the electrical is not the problem.

Hailers I followed your advice, used the starting fluid and I had it fire up, producing a nice cloud of smoke, reved it to 4K RPMs, turned on the fuel pump, then it would die do to flooding. Tried this for a day, and it wouldn't keep running for me but, supposedly this is normal.

NOW: I tried to start it again, this time it just turns and nothing. THought it was flooded so I pulled a plug to look and smell but, the plug faintly smelled of gas and was basicaly dry. not flooded. So jumpered the fuel pump and put in a switch, tried to start it without the pump and with the pump on, nothing. Don't have a pressure sensor so I couldn't check the pressure.

THe haynes manual said that if I turn the pump on it should only whirr for some seconds, if it kept going then it meant the fuel system is not pressuring up properly? Could it just be the pump? There are no gas leaks in the lines by the way, checked the high pressure filter and its not clogged, pulled the pump and the strainer on it is not clogged. Havent checked the low pressure fuel filter, haven't found it yet.

I have a feeling now that it is fuel, getting another pump from a junkyard today alhtough, I'm not sure if its actualy the pump.

Could it be something else?
Fuel pump relay?
Fuel pump has low current?
Clogged something?
Bad injectors?
Bad computers?
A cursed vehicle?

Thank you all, and especialy for reading through this message! :(

If you have jumpered the test connector, the pump should run as long as the key is set to "IGN".

Is it possible you don't have the AFM connected right?

Have someone else crank the engine while you measure the voltage at the pump...do you read anything?

Sammymatik 09-20-02 02:43 PM

Havent' checked the voltage while cranking, checked the voltage when jumpered and it reads 11.9 almost 12volts. I'll have to try it whilst cranking though, i'll do that.

i still think you have your injector plug connections in wrong...make sure you have your injector connections in, in this way....

If you get voltage with it jumpered, then don't worry about checking it while cranking...Does the pump actually work? Disconnect the fuel feed line in the engine bay, put it in a bucket, and run the pump momentarily...does high pressure fuel squirt out? BE CAREFUL!

Sammymatik 09-20-02 04:20 PM

Actually it is possible that I have the injectors hooked up incorrectly, I'll have to check this for sure! But the pump does work, tried it and it is pumping gas, I just wasnt sure whether or not it was pressuring up to the right level.

So the two secondary inectors have the longer length cord? And the primaries get the shorter cord then?

It's an easy mistake for me to make. :)

biorotary 09-20-02 04:24 PM

yep...the secondaries get the longer cords...

I had a similar problem when I hooked up my E6K for the first time. I just hard wired the pump right to the battery. Before I would start the car I would switch it on to make sure I heard that little whirring noise. You know its on then.
I have a 89Tii pump that I know works if you're looking for one. I'm in the bay area.

HAILERS 09-20-02 06:49 PM

Yo. The purpose of using starter fluid is to determine if it is a fuel problem or a ignition problem.

If you can spray starter fluid into the intake, and the car will go varoom for a moment, you have determined that there is not a ignition problem

So its fuel. Jumper the yellow connector on the right strut tower. Turn key on. Open the fuel cap. Do you hear the pump??????

Sorry, I forgot everything about your car. Are you using the same fuel injectors that were in the car prior to the rebuild??? I ask that thinking someone might have put some larger volume injectors in or ones of the wrong impedence.

Oh! I'm sure you did not do this, but someone else has done this......got the fuel lines on backwards. The one from the filter should go to the front pipe and the return line from the engine goes to the rear pipe.

Another thought......someone said jspec engines fuel pipe are just the opposite from the description just above. Dunno myself for sure about that.

Sammymatik 09-20-02 06:50 PM

the pump is making the whirr noise, but I wasn't sure if it was causing any problems because of low pressure or not?

HAILERS 09-20-02 06:59 PM

Sammymatik....I added some more to the above post. Have you read it again????? I doubt the pump is putting out low pressure. Could, but I'd rule that out. Ain't likely.

The fuel lines being on backwards is a real possibility. Check them asap.

Also....If the fuel pump plug is off, can you still make the engine go varooom by spraying starter fluid in the intake >>>>>>>....????????

HAILERS 09-20-02 07:24 PM

Say, when you said that the car would fire up and not keep running.....explain that a touch more. Did it run for several minutes and just not idle? Or did it run in the sense that the starter fluid would get it to go varoom for a few seconds and just die? Like the starter fluid was the only reason it ran for those few seconds??????

Check the eng fuse in the passenger compartment.

yeah I had the starter fluid in there and it revved up for a few seconds, as soon as the fuel pump was plugged in it died.... but that is all in the past.... :(

I feel like shooting myself, the worst of worst happened today. I was going to recheck the fuel injectors. I unbolted the intake manifold....

<<<<SSSIIIIGGGHHH>>>>

I hear a snap, my friend asks, "what was that"

OH SHIT! The god damn intake manifold broke on me!

At this point i feel ultra fuked. (excuse my french)

So now I don't even know what to think, Maybe I'm a worthless loser who can't even do something as simple as get a car to work.

sheesh, anybody need any parts? Fuck i feel like just selling it now, the damn car doesn't like me.
