Oil Pressure Drops to Zero After Starting, How To Remove Exhaust Manifold?

i just got done doing a auto to five speed conversion on my 89 GXL. and now when i start it the oil pressure goes between 30 and 45 psi then drops to zero. im not burning any oil (no smoke) and its not leaking anything. my idle is high and revs a little, but that has nothing to do with the pressure droping. maby bad gauge?

also is there a easy way to remove the exaust manifold while engine is in the car? any slik tips, thanks.

i got the exaust manifold off, what a pain. still would like some input on the oil pressure.

Verify pressure with an aftermarket gauge. The stock senders are old and tend to fail.

i was hoping it was the gauge so all check, if it is the gauge is there a way to fix it so i dont have to add another gauge? thanks.

The stock gauge is probably fine...it's the sending unit that wears out and needs replacing.

They are telling you to get a manual guage so you can test it to find out if you need to replace it. But chances are you'll have to remove the sender to test it. :) Its the round mushroom shaped thing under the oil filter. has a 1 wire clip on the end of it. Its about as round as a shot glass, with a thin neck that goes down to the rear plate. Don't unscrew it by the top piece, use a wrench underneath on the neck.

thanks guys. thats all it was. i replaced the sender unit with one from a spare block and it works like a charm. :)

i put on a new RB header that has new heat rap and it smokes like crazy and smells like crap. is that normal? thats not even letting it warm completely up. the first time i ran it i was to bussy listning to the sweet sound or the exaust while i reved it. then noticed it was smoking. :Wconfused

It will smoke and smell for a while as all the oil burns off.
