Oil pan "Gasket" job, will it hold up.
 

Hey guys, I needed to change my oil pan gasket for a drift event tomorrow, but the dealer couldn't get me one until Tuesday.

In order to run I can't be leaking oil as bad as I was, so I pulled the pan cleaned both surfaces really good and used some Toyota oil pan sealant and closed it back up. One of the bolts did snap on me, I think the hole was full of sealant so I got a false torque. I don't have time to get it out so it's staying like that. Next time I pull it off I'm putting studs in, those bolts suck and the holes are hard to keep the sealant out of.

Do you guys think it will hold up for a while, or is it going to start pissing oil at the drift event tomorrow?


I recently did the oil pan on my 91' FC, but I had an OE gasket and I used grey permatex. It has held up great, i just don't know what to think about sealant only.

Sealant only is perfectly fine, the last two engines I built used nothing but Ultra Black RTV on the oil pan and they're doing fine. :) "Permatex® Ultra Black® Maximum Oil Resistance RTV Silicone Gasket Maker"

That and some silk thread and it will be 100%

It says right in the FSM the stock gasket isn't necessary. A 1/8" silicone bead around the pan flange is all you need.

Sweet. Feeling better already, I just hate the pan bolts and I hope it's not my front cover that was leaking. It's a reman with around 18K.

There's been a lot of oil pan gasket questions lately. General rule is toss the gasket and just use black RTV.

I used just black rtv myself, no gasket. Roughly a 1/8" bead all the way around. No Leaks at all, and it's been about 9 years since the last rebuild.

I've had no luck w/ oil pans. My stock pan leaked so ....

First I installed the banzai oil ban brace/ stud kit w/ Racing a beat oil pan baffle and stock gasket lightly coated w/ RTV on both sides......leaked.

Next I did away w/ the gasket and just used Permatex "The right stuff" ......leaked.

That last engine had bad coolant seals so I have yet a third opportunity to seal the pan, I guess I'll just spit on it and see how that works.....

The pan job held up, but over the whole day of the drift event I managed to lose 3 quarts of oil out of the front cover gasket. It slipped out and is what was leaking.

Time for me to pull off the front cover, put a turbo Oil pump on, Shim my OPR for 80 PSI, tap the front cover for a future turbo oil drain and buy that baffled pineapple racing pan to install. It uses o-rings to seal instead of a gasket.
