oil leaking from stack guage cluster!?!?

i just picked up a 91 vert' and there is oil leak from what appears the gauge cluster i havnt bothered to tear everything apart yet, but this is very strange, it is my understanding that oil pressure gauge is electrical, and i cant think of any oil line that runs through the firewall, let alone into the dash.. any ideas before i get to figuring it out myself?

no oil lines do run inside the car. check behind the dash to see if at some point someone installed a mechanical aftermarket gauge. usually a white nylon tube

It's probably the oil seal in your speedo drive gear.
Oil is being conducted up the speedo cable and leaking from the connection at the gauge cluster.

bingo.

no aftermarket guage installed, already looked for that, i had guessed the the tranny fluid from the speedo cable, but it seems to be motor oil, tranny fluid has a pretty distinct stink to it, this smelt like motor oil, maybe the previous owner was retarded and used motor oil in the tranny? lol

The only place it could be is from the speedometer drive cable.

People do weird things...They put ATF in their engines, so maybe the previous owner thought that turnabout was fair play and put engine oil into the transmission?

Then again, there are many synthetic transmission oils (Amsoil...) that don't smell funky.

I had this same problem in my last FC and i want to know were it was coming from. The oil was leaking down from somewere high up in the dash area running down to the right and left of the sterring coloum then dripping on my pants. It also dripped threw the speaker slots. I could never figure this out i took some of the dash apart to see if i could figure it out. The more you hit boost and drove hard the faster it leaked. when you figure it out LET ME KNOW!

good point aaron, makes i guess, what needs to be replaced to stop this from happening? just startn- if its the same thing, its rpm related but i can see how it would seem to be from boost in a turbo car

clokker 10-28-08 03:41 PM

There is an o-ring in the drive gear assembly on the transmission that you need to replace.

there is 1 10mm bolt holding it on. you can get to it by removing the speedo cable. mazdatrix has the oring on their site.

Actually, I misspoke (or miswrote, to be accurate), there are TWO things that will need replacing.
The previously mentioned o-ring will stop a leak at the transmission where the drive gear assembly is inserted, but if your leak is internal- as it would be to force oil up the cable- there is also a regular oil seal in there.
Fortunately, my leak just required the o-ring replaced cause getting that internal seal out looked like a bitch.

Both parts are available from a dealer- combined cost was @$8.

I have a new seal- never used- if it turns out you need one.
