Oil leak from oil filter housing. Whats the best way to fix it ?
 

I have an oil leak from my oil filter housing, you can see it coming out of the edges and usually i see a little trail of oil where i first leave if i drive off. I dont think its losing really much oil pressure really from this so i dont consider it a major problem ( at least i would hope it isnt since i drove it like 5 times like this and let it idle a bunch).

I figure it probably needs some new orings ( i used old ones), some rtv on it ( i didnt even use any, and maybe a little more torquing power to get them on tighter (they are a pain in the ass to get the bolts onto in the position they are in underneath the oil filter/housing)

is there any better way to fix the problem or is what i am going to do the best thing ? has anyone else had this oil leak problem on their oil filterhousing ?

Its 2 O rings that you can find at any auto parts store..... never use old ones.

change the O rings it STUPID to reuse a cheap part like that

i had the same problem a month ago theres 2 nuts that hold to the housing i guess you would say take that of and then you will see 2 o-rings. i went to all the parts stores and no one had them i finally had to go to mazda and they were $6 each and then i had to wait 2 days to get them .couldn"t drive my car cause it was losing a half a quart a day .

Especially given that I gave you 2 new ones with the rebuild gasket install kit that came with the engine. :eek:

And considering that this is probably the most common oil-related failure on the FC. Those o-rings become hard very soon after installation....Many FCs are leaking from this area.

As a general rule (and I've told you this via IM), gaskets ALWAYS get replaced. The only ones you can reuse are some of the metal o-rings, and the exhaust gaskets, as well as that metal lower intake gasket.

ill have to see if i can find where i put them , i am a dummy i wish i just put the ones u gave me on :(

should i put rtv around the edges, cuz i may do that to ensure a good seal since itwas leaking from the edges before, anything i should put on the orings when i put them in or just put them in there.

Just use the O-rings, nothing else. Smearing a bunch of crap on them could make them leak.

The O-rings will hold for another 15-20 years by themselves.

I dont know how well RTV will stick to an oily surface. Your better off just replacing the rings.

Don't use RTV on o-rings. If you want to use something to keep them in place during assembly, use Hylomar.

exactly what size are these rings?

Pull them out and take them to the auto parts, you can even find them at Ace hardware.
